Sartoris

By Faulkner, William

Sartoris is a novel, first published in 1929, by the American author William Faulkner. It portrays the decay of the Mississippi aristocracy following the social upheaval of the American Civil War. The 1929 edition is an abridged version of Faulker's original work. The full text was published in 1973 as Flags in the Dust. Faulkner's great-grandfather William Clark Falkner, himself a colonel in the American Civil War, served as the model for Colonel John Sartoris.

FAULKNER, William.

New York: Harcourt Brace,, 1929. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine and front cover in red, top edge red, others untrimmed. With the Arthur Hawkins designed dust jacket. Housed in a quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: Edith M. Brown (presentation inscription, signature on front free endpaper, dated 1929 at foot); Louis Daniel Brodsky, American poet and Faulkner scholar (then deaccessioned from the Brodsky-Faulkner collection at Southeast Missouri State University); Roger Rechler (his sale, Christie's New York, 11 October 2002, lot 77). Cloth a little rubbed, front hinge weak. An excellent copy n the dust jacket with a few minor nicks. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his close childhood friend on the front free endpaper: "To my good friend, Edith, from Bill," and signed by Edith M. Brown beneath the inscription; additionally signed by Faulkner on the title, "William Faulkner 28 May 1929." Brown was one of three children of Calvin S. Brown, Faulkner's romance language professor at "Ole Miss" in the late teens. According to Frederick Karl, Brown was perhaps the most distinguished faculty member at the university, a Renaissance man who taught languages, archaeology, and geology, and collected pestles, mortars, and sleigh bells. He awarded Faulkner with a prize for a poem at the end of school (See Karl, William Faulkner, 1989, pp. 140, 153). Presentation copies of Sartoris are extremely rare.

FAULKNER, William.

London: Chatto & Windus,, 1932. Octavo. Original tan cloth, titles to spine in red, top edge stained red. With 8pp advertisements at the rear. With the Centaur Library issue dust jacket supplied from another copy. Housed in a burgundy quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Text somewhat browned but an exceptionally fresh copy in the somewhat tanned dust jacket. First UK edition, first impression, second binding but with the third state ads at the end, and with an example of the remainder dust jacket. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the title page, "William Faulkner for Else 11 Dec 1950". Signed and dated (1937) on the front free endpaper by the writer and journalist Thorsten Jonsson (1910-1950). Faulkner met Else Jonsson at the Nobel Prize ceremony in Sweden in December 1950. She was the recent widow of Thorsten Jonsson, the journalist and critic who had been instrumental in getting Faulkner published in Sweden. On the night of the Nobel dinner, 11 December, Faulkner walked Else home. He inscribed whichever copies of his books she had in the apartment and the two began a passionate affair which lasted several years. The couple met several times in Paris. Faulkner destroyed her letters to him but his side of the correspondence is one of the fullest and most remarkable extant. Faulkner's relationship with Else Jonsson was undoubtedly the most significant of his later life.

Faulkner's great-grandfather William Clark Falkner, himself a colonel in the American Civil War, served as the model for Colonel John Sartoris. Faulkner also fashioned other characters in the book on local people from his hometown Oxford. Literary critic Cleanth Brooks described the novel as "extremely well-written", full of literary allusions and exploring the plight of a lost generation. He compared Sartoris to the poem The Waste Land by T. S. Eliot.

Sartoris

FAULKNER, William

New York: Harcourt Brace, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. First edition in dust jacket. Faulkner's first important and successfully realized novel, and the first set in his magnificently conceived Yoknapatawpha County (although here called Yocona County). In a 1956 interview, Faulkner spoke of the creative liberation this turn had upon his writing life: "Beginning with Sartoris I discovered that my own little postage stamp of native soil was worth writing about and that I would never live long enough to exhaust it, and by sublimating the actual into the apocryphal I would have complete liberty to use whatever talent I might have to its absolute top." (Lion in the Garden 255). A few minor spots along top edge, otherwise fine in a nice example of the fragile Arthur Hawkins designed dust jacket, which, although spine faded, as with most copies, is nevertheless quite nice. Only a couple of tiny chips below the publisher's name at the spine's base spine keep it from being without paper loss.
