Rebecca.

Du Maurier, Daphne

London: Victor Gollancz Limited, 1938. First edition of du Maurier's masterpiece later made into the Oscar-winning 1940 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Octavo, original black cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with one small closed tear and light rubbing to the extremities. A nice example. "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again. It seemed to me I stood by the iron gate leading to the drive and for a while I could not enter, for the way was barred to me". These famous opening lines later became one of the most famous opening words ever recorded in Alfred Hitchcock's Oscar-winning 1940 film of the same name. Rebecca is certainly Du Maurier's most famous novel and one that many others after her attempted to imitate, as a resurgence of romantic mystery novels came soon after its publication. The Mystery Writers of America have named Rebecca among the top ten Mystery Novels of All Time.

Daphne Du Maurier

Stated first Edition/First Printing; Fine in a fine dust jacket. A pristine copy very scarce in this condition. A National Book Award winner in 1938, voted the UK's favorite book of the last 225 years in 2017 (beating out To Kill a Mockingbird, Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, etc.), and now part of the Great American Read as one of the USA's favorite novels. This volume is in fine condition with only a mild crimp to the bottom spine end and some discoloration to the paste downs; housed in a fine dust jacket that is exceptionally clean and bright with no flaws. Possibly the nicest copy available on the market. Not remaindered, not price clipped (2.75 intact), not ex-library, not book club, and no other markings are present. A one of a kind book in archival protection. "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again."

Daphne du Maurier

New York: Literary Guild of America, 1938. Book. Fine. Hardcover. Not Signed. Reprint. This Literary Guild of America edition was published in the same year as the 1st Edition. This copy is over 80 years old, has been well taken care of and is in fine condition. Its construction is unlike most of the poorly made book club editions. The cloth covered boards, Du Maurier's initials on the front cover, embossed spine and matching top stain add up to a handsome edition possibly as desirable and rare as the first edition. The text block is solid, clean and square. Endpapers, only slightly tanned, are clear of markings with NO previous owner's signature. Spine tight, boards rigid and tips pointed. There is no book club deboss on the rear cover. The jacket is in near fine condition with bold colors on the cover, just a hint of wear at bottom edges and a bit of spine and front cover top fade and some small shelf wear at some edges. It looks spectacular in its shiny new plastic cover.Literary Guild Magazine for October 1938 included. Shipping box is suitable for wrapping with a non-price listed purchase order inside along with biodegradable packing..

Rebecca - A Play in Three Acts.

DU MAURIER, Daphne.

Victor Gollancz, London., 1940. First trade edition. Preceded by French's Acting Edition. Wrappers with integral flaps - issued simultaneously with the hardback. Octavo. 120 pages. The play, adapted from the author's own novel, was first performed at the Manchester Opera House with a cast which included Margaret Rutherford and Celia Johnson. It provided the basis for Hitchcock's film version. On the front cover is the ownership signature of C.R. Ashbee (1863-1942), a leading light in the Arts and Crafts Movement. Strange to relate, Du Maurier's grandfather George had been in the habit of mercilessly lampooning Ashbee and his colleagues in his cartoons for the magazine Punch.Cheap paper faintly tanned. Spine a bit darkened. Slight stain to tail of spine. Very good. Scarce.
