A piracy may have been published in the same year. Estienne woodcut device on title (a philosopher standing at the foot of the Tree of Knowledge, and the motto "noli altum sapere.") The idea for this book stemmed from a conversation between the printer, Henri Estienne, who was known for his erudition, and King Henri III, the dedicatee. The King had asked why Italy, rather than France, claimed the most and best Ciceronian Latinists. Starting with a question, there are LXXXIIII propositions and Appendix. Some creases to titlepage and margin of one other leaf else exceptionally clean and crisp. *Sebastian Bloss was Professor of Medicine at Heidelberg in 1584, later at Ulm and finally in Tuebingen where he died.His most famous work was on the plague. Scarce - only 3 copies in German libraries none in the UK,but not in GM, Durling, Waller, Wheeler or Wellcome.

The Second work lacks titlepage and first 3 prelim leaves (supplied in facsimile), original text here begins on p9 with the Preface thus 9-317pp +[26 of 31]pp of Index ending with letter T, lacking final 3 leaves. *History of the Crusades in Latin, followed by Melchior Goldast's collection of writers in Latin on the History of Suevia.

Il racconto, attribuito a San Giovanni Damasceno (676-749) e popolarissimo in età medievale narra la conversione di Iosafat per merito del Santo eremita Barlaam. Sembra che la storia venne in realtà ricalcata sul modello della vicenda della conversione del Buddha. San Giovanni Damasceno venne dichiarato dottore della chiesa nel 1890. Opera redatta a cura di Georges Trapezuntius. Alla fine del volume la breve opera "De comparatione regis et monachi" di Giovanni Cristostomo a cura di Germain Brice. Limp vellum 17 cm (Ref: Smitskamp 61; Schweiger 2,355 & 1134; Brunet 5,2 1148; Renouard-1926, n° 1044 (Renouard et alii, 'Imprimeurs et libraires parisiens du XVIe siècle', Paris, 1964)) (Details: 5 thongs laced through the joints. Engraved printer's mark of Arnoldus Sittart on the title, his motto: 'Finis coronat opus', 'the end crowns the work'. (BaTyR : Base de Typographie de la Renaissance, no. 28409) The printer's mark shows the coat of arms of Cologne, the city where Arnoldus Sittart was born: the escutcheon bears 3 crowns and beneath them are twelve drops; the escutcheon is supported by a standing crowned griffin and idem lion; above the shield a helmet with peacock feathers as crest. Hardcover, 1554 Paris edition. Condition is very good. 19th century full leather binding, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Paginates by leaves (1 leaf=2 pages): 127, plus 1 leaf index. 2 blanks front and back look like they are from the old rebind. Title page and last page of index are pages with the most wear: title page has old ownership stamp, and a few stains. All other pages are near fine or fine. Paper is excellent quality: supple, lightly toned, not fragile. Binding is sound. Front blank endpaper has two inscriptions in Spanish. One is dated April 23, 1880. The other is earlier and signed by Alfredo Chavero (same as ownership stamp). No other writing or markings. A small book approximately 4.5 x 3.25 inches. Please see scans of the book you will receive. Feel free to inquire. Notes: I think first edition of this collection is 1530 (see OCLC: 925369798). And just so you know: the English translation of the title is my own and could be completely wrong.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Two volumes. First Tome dated 1587. Second Tome dated 1603. Bindings are tight and square. Marbled endpapers. Red top stain and bottom stain. Tome I has some cracking to front hinge and some loss at top of spine. Tome II has small chips at top front and rear hinges. Both tomes have edge wear. Some foxing to flyleaves and title pages. Tome I has some loss to the title page upper corner, as well as to a couple of subsequent pages. Same bindings and endpapers, although different publisher/printer in different years.

Giovanni Balbo's "Treatise on Prescriptions" is a rare, 16th-century manual on the Roman law of prescription. Prescription, not to be confused with medical prescriptions, deals with legal liabilities usually pertaining to property titles and ownership. Balbo was heavily influenced by the law writings of Publius Celsus, one of the most famous 1st-century Roman jurists.

Quarto (25x16cm) original blind-stamped vellum with central embossed image of Christ surrounded by female images titled SPES, spine on 4 cords (spine splitting but well held by cords, vellum very darkened). Title page with ownership inscription (? Daniel Bower) dated 1698, [664] leaves ([par]8 A-FFff8 4G4 HHhh-NNnn8 OOoo4), last page blank. Marginal numbers, not column numeration, are probably references to the unabridged Stephanus Thesaurus. *Abridged edition of Henri Estienne's Thesaurus Graecae linguae, compiled by Johann Scapula. The printer Guillaume Laimarie was active in Geneva 1578-1598.

Venice: al segno della speranza, 1547. Hardcover. Good. Quarto (150x110mm) original limp vellum covers with vellum ties. Cover loose, some wear on inside of cover page. Part of title-page missing. Some worming to endpages and back cover sligtly stained. Overall text in good condition, highly readable. Some minor folding to bottom corners, little impact on text. *First published in Florence during the supremacy of Savanarola in 1497.

Lyons: Bartholomeus Vincentius, 1572. Hardcover. Very Good. Emblematic publisher's device on titlepage VINCENTI + a few foliated capitals + printer's device on colophon, Joannes Marcorellius.. Octavo (175x115mm) fine stamped vellum, central portrait with text, floral borders and inked-in initials ARW + date 1592, central coat of arms on rear board, spine on 6 cords, clasps missing with marginal tear showing old MS on underlying vellum, [32],601,[7]pp (collated complete a-b A-2P). Worming without loss of text in margin of front board and on 1st few pages. Old library stamp with MS nr on front pastedown, stamp "Bibl. Gymn. Goth" on TP verso, very neat early Latin marginal notes on about 150pp, else clean & crisp throughout. This book supposedly gave Nevizzano a reputation as a misogynist. *Rare early medical text book on marital sex and related Canon & Roman Law, only 5 copies noted in British libraries.
