Printed on photo - "Post Laundry Group, Camp Custer, 1919 Photo by Mock". Theodore F. Mock was listed as the Camp Custer Photographer in David V. Tinder's "Directory of Early Michigan Photographers" published by Clements Library, 2013. Camp Custer, at Battle Creek, Michigan, had over 100,000 US Army troops pass through its doors between 1917-1919. This is an undated Harbrace reissue edition, circa 1936 Printed from First Edition second issue plates with the correction of "Lyte" for "Purdy" on p. 49, line 4. USED. VG/Good-. Dark red boards and original maroon dust. Quite rare thus. 5 ¾ X 8 ¼. 401 pages.

This beautiful memoir has a 3/4 binding with marbled dark blue boards and gilt edges. Inside of both boards and flyleaves also beautifully marbled. It is a first edition with a tissue-guarded frontispiece. Minimal scuffing along the sides of the spine, edges and corners. Pages tight and clean. Illustrations by author's brother Charles Huard, who was the official painter to the Sixth Army in France--12 illustrations and a full-page pen-and-ink sketch of a French soldier opposite the frontispiece. Bookplate inside the front cover reads "Edmund Lincoln Baylies" (1857-1932), who was a NY lawyer and member of NY high society during the Gilded Age. A very good copy and fine addition to any library.

The binding is worn and bumped, and the spine ends are chipped. Bottom corner bumped and creased. Scuffing along the fore edge of the front cover. A sound copy. The text is toned. The two leaves for pages 63-66 have large creases at the top right, affecting the text. Signed by an officer on the front cover. Signed "A. F. Kingman" who is listed in the rear of the book as 2nd Lt / 1st Lt. Capt. Early markings (presumably by Kingman), have pencil notations in the list of names, some marginal notes reading "KIA" for those killed in action. Scarce.

1919 hardcover edition by S.J. Duncan-Clark, a World War Analyst, Correspondent and Editor. This black cloth book has rubbed gilt title on the front board and spine (see Pic). The boards are rubbed but strong. The hinges are good, the pages and endpapers are age toned, but clean and unmarked (with the exception of the previous owner's name stamp on the title page). The color fortis picture is of Gen. Pershing, and has been repaired. This book is believed to be a first edition because the copyright date and printing date are the same. A-2
