Housed in three quarter clamshell case. Rebecca Goodale: "This is a book I have been working on since 2010. In its 11 chapters it conjures up memories of white animals (and plants). Although this book is not specifically about flora and fauna protected by the Endangered Species Act, the book brings to mind how human impact has created islands of territory that limit DNA pools and lead to such anomalies as albinism, leucism, melanism, and piebalds. In fact two piebald white tail deer in our neighborhood were the start of my poetic remembrance in chapter 5. So, although there isn't a specifically labeled threatened or endangered species in this collection, I feel I am still working from the same point of view with this volume. Melbourne: Robert S. Brain, 1885 -, 1890. A very good set finely bound. Two volumes, thick octavo, with all 20 "decades", 199 lithographic plates (including one double folding plate), nearly all coloured and some finished by hand; attractively bound in contemporary navy half calf, spines gilt, double labels in maroon and tan. A superb copy of this beautifully illustrated work. McCoy's book has been a somewhat overlooked classic of Australian natural history, representing the culmination of nineteenth-century scholarship in the field. Irish-born Frederick McCoy arrived in Melbourne in 1854 to take up the first Professorship of Natural Science at the newly-formed University of Melbourne. For the next forty years he was at the centre of colonial scientific life. He became the first Director of the newly formed National Museum of Victoria and was responsible for the rapid development of the Museum and its collection. McCoy 'built up an outstanding natural history and geological collection, including… Read More

Description:
Nuremberg, XIXth century.
Pack of 78 cards (complete) with a black marbled back, preserved in a carton box from the end of the XIXth century. Black shagreen lettering piece gilt-stamped on the box.
Dimensions of the cards: 110 x 58 mm.
Pretty pack very pleasantly colored at the time, inspired from the exotic and oriental animal tarots of the XVIIIth century.
The figures are very well drawn and of large dimensions. The ensigns are hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs, and on the Jack of clubs we can see the name of the card maker I. Schenck. The jack of clubs has the usual attitude of the German card makers; he has his hand on a halberd.
At the top and bottom of the cards representing the trumps there is a large Roman numeral indicating the value of the card; in the middle a scene represents an exotic or imaginary animal: dromedary, unicorn, leopard, lion, elephant, monkeys, bears…
The king of diamonds indicates the city where the cards were made, Nuremberg.
The 78 cards were engraved on metal and… Read More
