Multi-fold hand-colored map of London and environs; title, advertisement; directions for placing of plates; preface, 2 pp; alphabetical list of the nobility and gentry, 7 pp; a list of the stage coaches etc., 7 pp; 336 pp. with all 16 plates. Complete, pages age-toned but unworn and undamaged. Recently rebacked to style in leather with original leather spine, gilt and with black morocco spine label, laid down over the new backing; original leather-covered boards. A solid and clean example, hinges tight, no names or marks. Map with horizontal 3" closed tear at spine edge, no losses, also a 3/4" marginal tear at bottom outside of the printed area, nice coloring, very clean, no repairs.

Cloth a little rubbed and slightly creased on the spine with a small dark mark to the lower spine. Bookseller's(?) pencil notation to the front free end-paper and top margin of page 1 of the advertisements. Internally clean and unmarked. Complete with plans and maps (6 folded) as listed in the "table méthodique". Very small tear to the hinge of the map of Buenos-Ayres. Text in French. Albert Martinez illegally, and seemingly with impunity, used the Baedeker name to sell his guide. More than that he closely mimicked the Baedeker look and feel as closely as he could. Book is near Fine. Soft leather boards are in Fine condition having been protected by DJ. Binding is in very good condition.
Edges marbled. Internally clean free of foxing, markings or inscriptions except for previous owner name in pencil on title page and previous sale price and year in pencil on half title.
DJ has age related wear with chipping at extremities and closed tears at folds (see images).
A very scarce title with DJ particularly in such condition. It includes rare publisher's slip on detaching sections, if desired.

Intersting section on Observatories (pages 630-697) has illustrations of the instruments and the buildings and includes the Radcliffe Observatory, Oxford.
