One of only twelve men to walk on the Moon, commander of Apollo XVII, the last Lunar mission. Cernan is also one of only three men to circle the Moon on more than one flight (Apollo X and XVII), and only two who circled the moon, and later landed on the Moon. (Jim Lovell flew on Apollo VIII, and was due to land on aborted mission Apollo XIII. John Young flew with Cernan on Apollo X, and later landed on Apollo XVI).

A student of James Wright and Theodore Roethke at the University of Washington in the early 1960's. She mentored Tess Gallagher and was friends with Richard Hugo and Sister Mary Gilbert later known as Madeline DeFrees.
