Folio. 33 cm. [12], 578, [58] pp. Large printer's mark on t.p.; woodcut initials and headpieces. Old panelled calf, rebacked, with corners somewhat worn. Still a handsome and very good copy overall. Ink ownerships of the British novelist William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) on front pastedown and one of his ancestor's, T. Thackeray (probably Thomas Thackeray, 1736-1806, a surgeon at Cambridge), at head of title-page. (Adams H-611).

Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Danielem Elsevirium, 1671 A very good copy of the '3rd and Final' edition of Richard Lower's major treatise on the working of the heart and lungs. Richard Lower (1631-1691) was the first person to perform a blood transfusion, reporting in 1666 that blood had been successfully transferred between 2 dogs. Shortly afterwards he carried out an experiment to transfuse some blood from a sheep to a man - with some hopes that the gentleness of the lamb would be carried in the blood. He counted Thomas Willis (founder of the Royal Society) and Robert Hooke as close associates and was a follower of William Harvey. Tractatus de Corde (roughly translated as Treatment of the Heart) was his most important work, detailing his experimental surgery and findings. 20 x 26 cm quarto hardcover, contemporary marbled paper covered boards, vellum tips to corners, leather spine with gilt black leather title label, gilt compartments, xv, 217, [3], 30 plates, 19 of which are folding, 2 extending to 112 cm with multiple mounted leaves. Plate VII inscribed, "J.D. Coulet sculpsit a Toulouse les 30 planches," Plate IX: "J.D. Coulet Parisiens sculpsit." The plates are remarkably bold impressions on heavy paper. Covers clean with light wear, abrasion to leather of top spine compartment, light foxing to endpapers. Binding tight, text pages and plates are crisp and unmarked, a small ink hole in text leaves 119/120 and 127/128, browning to some page edges, water stain top corner of last pages.
