Description:
1st Edition. FIRST EDITIONS IN MINT CONDITION AND IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of Abraham Wald's seminal work on sequential tests of statistical hypotheses. Before Wald, the traditional style of statistical decision was to posit a hypothesis, make a predetermined number of measurements, then make a decision whether to accept or reject the hypothesis. Wald realized that this procedure is quite wasteful, and that many measurements could be saved if given the option to decide at every step whether to continue or stop the measurement process. "According to Wald, the resulting ‘sequential probability ratio test frequently results in a savings of about 50 percent in the number of observations over the most efficient test procedure based on a fixed number of observations" (Gass, An Annotated Timeline of Operations Research, 65). In these papers Wald, known now as "the father of sequential analysis and decision theory," first presents the theoretical foundations of the theory of sequential analysis. The ideas he… Read More

[8],+320 pages. Small quarto (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in contemporary vellum with title in script on spine. (Medina BHA 5346; Palau 214290; Sabin 58993) First edition.Fray Antonio Raimundo Pascual was a Majorcan Cistercian brother. He wrote at least six works that were published in his lifetime, four of which dealt with Llull.Treatise seeking to show that the medieval Catalan thinker Ramón Lull (or Llull; 1232?-1316), a native of Palma, Majorca, had discovered the use of the magnetic compass in navigation, and that Lull's theories regarding the existence of a Western continent influenced Columbus. Llull's Art (in Latin Ars) is at the center of his thought and undergirds his entire corpus. It is a system of universal logic based on a set of general principles activated in a combinatorial process. It can be used to prove statements about God and Creation (e.g., God is a Trinity). Often the Art formulates these statements as questions and answers (e.g., Q: Is there a Trinity in God? A: Yes.). It works… Read More

The first edition of a book by the German mathematician Felix Hausdorff (1868-1942) presents his research on the theory of sets, focusing particularly on the development of a formal axiomatic system for set theory. Hausdorff's work on set theory was significant in shaping modern mathematics and establishing its foundations. In the book, he delves into properties of sets, the nature of set operations, and the importance of axiomatic systems in comprehending these phenomena. Furthermore, Hausdorff introduces the concept of cardinality, which serves as a measure of the size of sets.
