Small octavo (7 1/4" x 14") bound in quarter leather with four raised spine bands and lettering in gilt to spine and cover. (Viñaza 433; Palau 219254) First edition. The Otomí are an indigenous American tribe residing in the central plateau region of Mexico, most heavily concentrated in the states of Hidalgo, Mexico, Puebla, Veracruz, and Michoacan, and who speak one of four dialects of the Otomí language. In this catechism, Francisco Pérez first gives a detailed explanation in Spanish of the different sounds of the Otomí language and how to pronounce them. However, the language has been noted for the difficulty in reproducing it using Roman letters, and for this reason according to Nicolas Leon, "their few printed texts provoked the censure of the Fourth Mexican Council and serious controversies between the professors of that language of that era." Mr. Juan Bautista de Guemes bought an Hacienda in the villages of Tepexpan and Tequisquitlan, with many oxen and other cattle, which makes labor very hard and plenty, therefore he is requesting that Indians be assigned to him as have been assigned to other nearby Haciendas.
The viceroy sends the Lieutenant of Repartimiento from Tacuba to check the Hacienda. He reports some land is irrigated and some not, much livestock, wheat and barley. There is need for labor. The Viceroy orders the Lieutenant to assign Indians to this Hacienda in the same amount as the others have received, and to register them in the Book of Repartimientos. George Pinckard was an English physician, known as an author, an abolitionist, and in the field of insurance. On 30 September 1794 Pinckard was admitted a licentiate of the College of Physicians of London. In October 1795 he was appointed a physician to the forces, and accompanied Sir Ralph Abercromby's expedition to the West Indies. He was on the Santo Domingo staff, and had numerous delays before starting, during which he made the acquaintance of James Lind, then in charge of Haslar Hospital. He reached Barbados in February 1796. In his Notes on the West Indies (3 vols. 1806; 2nd ed. 2 vols. 1816), Pinckard described his experiences in the West Indies and Guiana, particularly of slavery. Naturgeschichte der Saeugethiere von Paraguay.
Basel, Schweighauser, 1830.
8vo. XVI, 394 pp. 19,5 x 12 cm.
Contemporary half calf with gold-tooled spine.

First and only edition of Johann Rudolf Rengger's study on mammals of Paraguay, in which he first describes the giant otter and makes important behavioural observations on monkeys that would influence Darwin's philosophy. In 1818 Rengger, a Swiss doctor, embarked on a scientific journey to the understudied region of Paraguay with the aim to research the natural history of the region and to collect specimens. Though he amassed a large collection of flora and fauna much of it was later confiscated by the Paraguayan government. He made extensive trips during which he observed the physical-geographical as well as the social and ethnographic situation. In 1825 he returned to Europe. His findings were posthumously published in the… Read More

Don Bartolomé de Alva was a Novohispanic mestizo secular priest and Nahuatl translator. Alva was one of the youngest children born to indigenous Doña Ana Cortés Ixtlixochitl and her husband, a Spaniard, Juan Pérez de Peralta. Alva may have been the youngest, or he may have had a younger sister, but records are unclear. He was born around 1597, which appears to be around the time his mother became the cacique of Teotihuacan.
In 1634 Alva wrote and published a Nahuatl-language confessionary, Confessionario Mayor, y Menor en Lengva Mexicana (A Guide to Confession Large and Small in the Mexican Language), for the use of priests administering confession to Nahuas. This book is a script to the Catholic Sacrament of Confession… Read More
