John Murray. London.,1815. FIRST EDITION. 8vo.(8.5 x 5.6 inches). Lovely clean, wide margined copy in contemporary full red straight grained morocco. Elaborate gilt decoration to spine and corners of boards, within a triple ruled border. Centre ruled panel in gilt. Gilt inner dentelles. Blue coated endpapers. All edges gilt. Spine a bit darkened and rubbed. Boards with areas of darkening to top(where the book has sat on a shelf betwen shorter books). Overall a very good copy in a very good, highly attractive early binding. Herbert's great Scandinavian poem appears to have only been printed twice in his life-time, This first edition and a second printing of 1816.:

Comprising Book III - reign of Pribislaus II to Albert I 1329; and Book IV - of the Dukes of Mecklenburg, from Albert I to Henry the Fat, 1329-1423. Complete with 2 full page engravings. Bound in an exceptional contemporary full leather binding with extensive gilt tooling and an intricate star design to boards. Raised bands to spine. The binding has some darkening to the spine, some tenderness at the top of the joint with the front board, and some wear to corners and edges. Marbled endpapers. Aeg. Contents in very good condition - occasional light spotting and some offsetting from the engravings to the text. A lovely volume.
