This is the seventh in the Aubrey Maturin series, and this first edition is scarce as Collins cut back on the print run after remaindering the previous title "The Fortunes of War."

Stated third printing (1918) of the second edition of 1916 (the first had been issued the previous year as the work of "A British Statesman"). A rare original Huebsch printing of this singular work opposing the criminal statecraft that resulted in the Great War. Author Francis Neilson and editor Albert Jay Nock would found The Freeman a few years later. This copy bears the ownership label of American civil servant and publisher William Morgan Shuster to the front pastedown; else unmarked with a little spotting to edges.
