Description:
1650 1ed Execution Charles I Defensio Regia Saumaise French Royalist Civil War

Claude Saumaise was a 17th-century French scholar known for his editions and commentary of classical works and Greek anthologies. However, he also published a defense of Charles I of England following his execution. Curiously, Saumaise's 'Defensio Regia' takes on a thoroughly royalist agenda, even from a Frenchman, and Charles II even helped publish the book. This book even inspired John Milton who published his own piece of political propaganda that covered the events of Charles I and II.

1788 Life of Frederick II of Prussia Germany WARS Austria Politics 4v Laveaux

"The first object in the establishment of an army ought to be making provision for the belly, that being the basis and foundation of all operations
– Frederick the Great

Frederick II was the most famous King of Prussia, notable for his 46 years of reign. He served and ruled over Brandenburg-Prussia and was as significant force in the Wars of Polish and Austrian Succession. Frederick himself invited French historian Jean-Charles Laveaux to embark on a substantial work on the history of the Prussian monarchy (of course, Frederick II was the most important facet of that monarchy).
This time spent with Frederick II allowed Laveaux to publish three different works surrounding the life and reign of Frederick II. 'Life of Frederick II, King of Prussia' includes documents, speeches, anecdotes, and first-hand experiences covering the life and eventual death of 'Old Fritz'.

Clement Walker, better known by his pseudonym Theodore Verax, was a 17th-century English politician best known for his monumental work 'The History of Independency'. This book, which consisted of numerous treatises, was written to outline the fallacies and myths of religious factionalism in England. Walker discusses various rulings in the House of Commons but primarily those pertaining to the English Civil War.
The second part of History of Independency, entitled 'Anarchia Anglicana', was published in 1649 immediately following the execution of King Charles I. Note the significant records of Oliver Cromwell throughout this work.

1684 History of Charles IX Huguenot Religion Wars Bartholomew Day Varillas 2v

Antoine Varillas was a French historiographer who is remembered for his numerous historical accounts of French royals such as King Louis XI, Louis XII, Charles VIII, and even Saint Louis. Unfortunately, his writings received little recognition. As a result, his scholarly reputation was negatively impacted. It was not until much later that the public would show interest in his writings.

His 'History of Charles IX' is an important history of 16th-century France, the House of Valois, the Huguenot wars of religion, and the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre.
