1793 Joel Barlow Privileged Orders French Revolution Thomas Paine + Beer Brewing

Joel Barlow was an important 18th-century American diplomat who wrote several controversial treatises and pamphlets in which he supported the French Revolution. One such work was 'Advice to the Privileged Orders'. First published in 1792, this work was Barlow working through his promotion of the Revolution, offering advice who were seeking to understand answers against the government. This work became closely associated with Thomas Paine's 'Rights of Man', and the two were often studied in conjunction with one another.

William Dugdale was 17th-century English historian known for his works of antiquity of English aristocracy and monastics. While not his most notable work, 'Troubles in England'
is a treatise written to describe the wars that influenced Europe and England during the 17th-century. Dugdale correlates three wars – English Civil War, Barons' War, and the French Wars of Religion – and how they related to each other. Interestingly, the DNB notes that this work was "written throughout in a strain of animosity to all who took the anti-royalist side." However, this work isnotable for its accuracy.

The autobiography of King Charles I of England was published shortly after he was executed following the English Civil War. Known as 'Eikon Basilike', this diary gives light to the life of the king, as well as prayers, and secrets of the English military that led into the Civil War. While it is not certain that Charles I was the author or not, it is recognized as a work of Royalist propaganda and quite popular, even though it was highly disapproved of.

This 1681 Royston printing features the expected allegorical frontispiece which depicts Charles I as a Christian martyr.

Louis Vignerot du Plessis was an 18th-century French diplomat, better-known for serving as the 3rd Duke of Richelieu. After serving the War of Austrian Succession and the Seven Years War, Richelieu became the Marshal of France under Louis XIV. An extensive biography of his life was published in 1791 by Louis Faur. However, more than describing his political and military careers, Faur's "Vie privée du maréchal de Richelieu" describes Richelieu's private life, more specifically his relationships with women. It contains many original letters and private memoirs providing great insight to the life of Richelieu outside of his public life.

Charles II of England ruled in Great Britain and Ireland until 1685. Known as the Prince of Wales, Charles II became king of Scotland in 1649 and directed the restoration of the throne as well as many other political and military feuds in the 17th-century. However, prior to his rise to the throne during the Second English Civil War, Charles II was furious with the anti-Royalist regime and vehemently spoke out against those who would not support the Royalist cause. One such proof of this was his letter called simply "The Resolution" – an account of Oliver Cromwell's campaigns as well as his perspectives against those who opposed Charles's rise to power.
