Description:
1819 Memoires of Duke of Sully France Henry IV Huguenot Utopian Europe 5v SET"A very valuable memoire of the history of the reign of Henry IV"Maximlien de Bethune was a 16th-century French statesman who was the first Duke of Sully. Most known for his service under Henry IV of France, Sully left a collection of memoirs which is now a valuable and important work on the history of France during the reign of Henry the Great. Even though 'Memoires' contains many fictitious stories, it is still recognized for its accuracy and portrayal of European royalty. The most controversial section of 'Memoires' is Sully's vision of a utopian society designed for all of Europe. He envisioned a Christian republic that was governed by a 'Very Christian Council' in which all differences were resolved and a military was complete removed. Some scholars even claim that Sully's plan helped establish what would become the current European Union.According to Tulard, this work is a "very valuable memoire of the history of the… Read More

1664 English LAW Lyndwood Provinciales Acton + Sharrock Canterbury Oxford

William Lyndwood was 14th-century English bishop best-known for his book the 'Provinciale'. This work is a commentary on English ecclesiastical decrees under the rule of the Archbishops of Canterbury and the titles of Pope Gregory IX. 'Provinciale' is one of the best accounts of the life and ecclesiastical law of English clergy during the 13th- through 15th-centuries. In the 17th-century, English historian Robert Sharrock edited and supplemented Lyndwood's work, clarifying many of the constitutions and statues of Canterbury Archbishops.

This 1664 Oxford edition is paired with Sharrock's edition of John Acton's 'Constitutiones Legatinae Regionis Anglicanae'. Also written in the 14th-centuy, 'Constitutiones' was a commentary on papal legates to Henry III of England from Cardinal Otho and Cardinal Ottobone. For centuries, these two constitutions formed the basis of English law.

1631 Principatibus Italiae Italian Politics Elzevier Italy Laet Segetho Galileo

'De Principatibus Italiae' is a rare, early 17th-century work featuring a collection of important essays and treatises by notable authors Joannes de Laet and Thomas Segetho. Published by the famed Elzevier, this book features two main works:
·
'Incerti Auctoris de Principibus Italiae Commentarius'
·
'Tractatus de Territoriis, Potentia, Familiis, Foederibus, Principum, Rerumpublicarum…'
Both of these works are studies and observations on the Italian government and politics. (Shahan). It should be noted, that while Segetho was not the most famous of English scholars, he was a skilled poet and pupil of Galileo. He is probably best remembered for comparing Christopher Columbus and Galileo saying how much greater Galileo was because he 'gave us new worlds without any damage to anybody!'.

Description:
ca. 1935. Very Good. Printed bill, 35 x 50 cm. Blue ink on paper. Restored and laid down. The propaganda war against Franco’s forces in Spain was fought largely with posters. These were pasted up on walls in the night at great risk not only to those putting them up, but to the printers, artists, and organizers, too. The Socorro Rojo Internacional (S.R.I.), a creation of the Communist International Congress of 1922, was intended to function as a support and aid organization (providing soup kitchens, medical care, etc.) but also propagandized energetically. This poster declares “War unto Death! To the provocateur, the spy, to anyone who sows discontent and fear. Let’s end the Fifth Column.” The little figure is composed of multiple eyes and antennae, keeping watch and listening. Such posters were willfully destroyed, and surviving examples are rare.

Description:
1690 William Temple Netherlands History English Franco-Dutch War Amsterdam 2in1
William Temple was a 17th-century English author who published a variety of works, most of which were essays on politics, historical perspectives of England, and memoirs. While most of his works were shorter pieces, one of his most substantial works was 'Observations up the United Provinces of the Netherlands'. In this work, Temple describes the rise and progress of the Netherlands, government, culture and customs, religious preferences, trade, and commerce, as well as a commentary on their ultimate destruction in 1672 to war with France.
This book also includes a second edition of William Temple's 'Memoirs of What Past in Christendom' – an account of the Franco-Dutch War and the third Anglo-Dutch War. Interestingly, this work was finished with the help of Jonathan Swift, Temple's secretary at the time.

1761 MEDICINE War of Austrian Succession Theobald Dispensatory Cures Surgery
John Theobald's "Medulla Medicinae Universae" is a rare 18th-century dispensatory. Throughout the War of Austrian Succession, there was a growing need for care for the sick and wounded. Theobald wrote this book for British soldiers in Flanders during the war. This particular 1761 edition was collected and edited by John Pringle who included some of the original recipes for medicines used during the war, including treatment of women and children. Curiously, this book also contains the cure for gonorrhea which was commonly contracted while in military hospitals.

First UK edition of Russell Kirk's (1918-1994) landmark history of modern intellectual conservatism. When The Conservative Mind was first published in 1953 by the Henry Regnery Company in Chicago, a substantial literature had developed in opposition to (or, at least as a critique of) modern liberalism, including through the works of Albert J. Nock, James Burnham, T. S. Eliot, and Richard Weaver. What the literature seemed to lack, however, was a unifying concept, or guiding principle, capable of combining its many unique strands into a coherent tradition. As Henry Regnery affirmed in the book's seventh revised edition, "it was the great achievement, one might even say the historic achievement, of Russell… Read More

1777 Walk in Canterbury England Illustrated Cathedral Castle MAP Monks Gostling
William Gostling was an 18th-century English historian who is primarily remembered for his history of Canterbury. As a native of Canterbury, Gostling had a first-hand perspective of the city and its environs. In this history, "A Walk in and About the City of Canterbury", Gostling focuses heavily on the iconic structures including Canterbury Castle, Church of St. Martin, St. Augustine's Monastery and Abbey, Canterbury Cathedral, and many others. Gostling also offers an interesting perspective on the 1174 fire of the cathedral, which is often thought to have been deliberately begun by monks!
This desirable 1777 edition includes 24 full-page engravings including numerous views of the cathedral and a folding map of the city!
