1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. Color wrappers; 9.12 inches tall; folded once to 4 inches opening to 8 inches; (unpaged) 16 pages; illustrated with historical captioned photos on each page with some drawings, full-color two-page map of Florida in the center. Carefully handled, small rub on the fold on the bottom of last page / wrapper. Produced by the De Land (Fla.). Chamber of Commerce. [c1926] Only four copies are located in Institutions: the Univ of Virginia Southern States Pamphlet Collection; Univ of Miami; Fla State; State Lib. of Florida [OCLC]. A beautiful and uncommon piece of Central Florida History. Published to promote Deland on the 50th year of its founding by Henry A. DeLand.

Pamphlet circa 1809. The wreck of the HMS Centaur in September, 1782 is a famous event with many accounts. The Centaur left Jamaica for England and sank in a hurricane. The survivors drifted for 16 days before arriving in the Azores. Twelve survived while 400 were lost. Pamphlets of this type were sometimes sold separately and sometimes bound in volumes. This item appears disbound from a larger volume but may still be regarded as complete. There is a note at bottom of page 2 "3d Ed. 17,000" making this a later printing. WorldCat locates 1 copy but it is from a different publisher. See OCLC: 751357712. Condition is Good: disbound from larger volume. Closed tear affecting pages 1-2 (see image). Paginates: (1)-12. With a couple of ink annotations in a contemporary hand relating to earlier land transactions of Chaissain(?) and G. & R. Morris. Map supported with posterboard and protected with plastic sleeve. 1855 Single Sheet. 18 1/2 x 24 inches. Being territory about 25 miles northeast of Watertown, N.Y. and 65 miles north of Utica, lying in the townships of Antwerp, Philadelphia, leRay, Wilna and Diana, an area which includes present-day Fort Drum and remains one of the most sparsely populated in the state. The land has been divided here into approximately 900 numbered lots of 440 acres each. The routes of the Odgensburg and the St. Lawrence turnpikes are given, as is the "Military Road" from Sacketts Harbor to Ogdensburg passing through Alexandria to the west.
