Description:
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1956. 1st Edition. Hardcover. A small number of the first edition sets were produced bearing the words "PRESENTATION EDITION. NOT FOR SALE." on the copyright page of each volume. In all other respects such copies are identical to normal first editions, including the $6.00 price on the dust jacket flap. Such presentation copies are quite scarce. (See Langworth p.319 for further details.) Here is Volume Two only. Condition is near-fine+ in a very good correct first printing dust jacket. The binding is clean, tight, and square with bright gilt and virtually no wear. The contents are pristine - crisp and bright with no spotting and no previous ownership markings. The book appears clearly unread. Even the untrimmed text block fore edge is bright and clean. Only very slight speckling of the unfaded red-stained top edge prevents this copy from being truly fine. The dust jacket unclipped, clean, and complete with no losses or tears. It suffers from the usual sunning to… Read More

London: National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations, 1950. 1st Edition. Paperback. This booklet contains the first printed appearance of Churchill's speech of 14 October 1950 at the 71st Annual Conservative Party Conference. Five years earlier, Churchill's Conservatives had been soundly defeated in the General Election at the end of the war. Churchill would head opposition to the Labour Government until the General Election of 1951, which returned the Conservatives to majority and Churchill to the office of Prime Minister. At the 71st Annual Conservative Party Conference, Churchill addressed a mass meeting of more than 5,000 representatives in the Empress Ballroom, Winter Gardens, Blackpool, at the conclusion of the Conference on Saturday, 14 Ocober, at 2:30 PM. This address appears at pp.107-113 of this 116-page "Verbatim Report of the Proceedings together with the Text of Mr. Churchill's Speech". In introducing Churchill, Sir David Maxwell Fyfe concluded: "Mr. Churchill can have no… Read More

"Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."

First published in 1936, this now-classic volume spans a time of rapid and far-reaching change in England--from Gladstone's first ministry, through the great contest with Disraeli, the Home Rule debate, the establishment of the Labour moverment, the Boer War, and the Liberal reforms of 1909-10, to the end of an era marked by the catastrophe of 1914. With stimulating analyses of social and economic developments as well as domestic and foreign policy, Ensor's account serves as a superb introduction to the period it covers and offers insight into the world of the 1930s in which it was written.
