Londres, 1785.

12mo in red morocco, double gilt fillets, decorated spine, inner gilt edges, gilt edges. Binding of the end of the 19th century.

131 x 80 mm.

First edition "unobtainable today" of the first issue of the "Diable au corps", printed in 1785, one of the most famous erotic novels published simultaneously with the works of Marquis de Sade.

This very rare first edition is decorated with 4 erotic figures.

Published clandestinely in 1785, without the author's consent, this edition delivers to the public the first version of the first part of Le Diable au corps (1803), whose text at the time was still being written by Nerciat.

Le Diable au corps was condemned to destruction by a decision of the Court of Assizes of the Seine, dated August 9, 1842 and by a judgment pronounced by the 6th chamber of the Correctional Court of the Seine on May 12, 1865.

FRENCH

Londres, 1785.

In-12, maroquin rouge, double filet doré, dos orné, dentelle intérieure, tranches dorées. Reliure de la fin du XIXè siècle.

131 x 80 mm.

12mo [131 x 80 mm] in red morocco, double gilt fillets, decorated spine, inner gilt edges, gilt edges. Binding of the end of the 19th century.
First edition "unobtainable today" of the first issue of the "Diable au corps", printed in 1785, one of the most famous erotic novels published simultaneously with the works of marquis de Sade.
This title was used by Raymond Radiguet (1903-1923) for his autobiographical novel published the year of his death.
Le Diable au corps is a picture of Parisian mores shortly before the Révolution, and Nerciat has supplemented this picture with another: Les Aphrodites, which takes place some fifteen years later, during the first revolutionary convulsions. It was undoubtedly in connection with Le Diable au corps and Les Aphrodites that Baudelaire wrote the note he intended to develop: "The Revolution was made by voluptuous people".
This very rare first edition is decorated with 4 erotic figures.

Description:
New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons / The Knickerbocker Press, 1927. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Corners a bit rubbed, boards faintly soiled, ink date and owner bookplate of Robert N. Cherry on front flyleaf. 1927 Half-Leather. iv, 325 pp. 8vo. No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.
