DJ has black/white photo of Hughes on front, and photos 1920, 1947, 1939 and sketch 1971 on back cover. Book has minor shelf wear on bottom edge of boards. Heavy interior of book has sagged a bit at top of spine, but no damage or missing pages. Photo of book is online. Rag edges pages. A heavy book, may require additional postage. Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the fourth and final volume. Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. The final volume was published on the eve of the Second World War in 1938. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." The string-bound pamphlet in blue-grey card covers measures 7.25 x 5.25 inches (18.4 x 13.3 cm) and is 20 pages in length. Pages 5-11 contain Churchill's tribute and pages 12-18 that of C.C. Martindale (Jesuit author, scholar, and Oxford philosopher). This first edition, only printing is a near fine copy, clean and complete with sharp corners. We note only a hint of wear to the spine ends and a tiny blemish to the lower rear cover that shows also on the rear cover verso and facing verso (blank apart from the name of the printer at the foot of the page).
