Description:
1629 Zamoro De Eminentissima Mariology Catholic Church BANNED Mary Original Sin

Giovanni Zamoro's 'De Eminentissima' is one of the most important 17th-century books on Mariology. While most Catholic treatises written at this time glorify the Virgin Mary, Zamoro notably treats the Holy Virgin's original sin as an important facet of the immaculate conception. Because of this unmentionable topic, Zamoro's treatise is often a banned book in the Catholic lexicon – most notably was placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum under Pope Innocent XI.

Note dating from this work comes from colophon on the final leaf of text.

Description:
1685 1ed Assassination King Charles II England Rye House Plot 2in1 Thomas Sprat

A first-hand account of the plot to assassinate King Charles II!

Thomas Sprat was involved with one of the most controversial conspiracies in 17th-century Britain. The Rye House Plot was a plan, in 1683, to assassinate King Charles II and his brother James II. This book includes two works, and the two were intended to be published together. According to Lowndes,
"This [work] is always considered a discreditable production, and the author himself completely destroyed all its pretensions to authenticity; for in letters which he wrote after the Revolution, he admits that James II altered the papers in divers passages, and then caused them to be printed."

Description:
1583 GREEK Hierocles of Alexandria Golden Verses Pythagoras Marcilius Philosophy

Hierocles of Alexandria was a 5th-century Greek writer. The only surviving work of Hierocles, who studied under Plutarch, was his commentary on Golden Verses of Pythagoras. It included a treatise on providence and fate and his arguments against predestination, magic practices, and superstitions. However, his views did not favor the providence of a divine God, rather focused on irrational worldly needs. Although Christianity was not mentioned in his works, his writings have been used to reconcile traditions between Greek orthodox and Christian beliefs. (Mozley).
This 1583 edition was collected and edited by Joannes Curterius and features both Latin and Greek texts in parallel with title in Greek transliteration. Curiously, this volume consists of Theodor Marcilius's edition of Pythagoras as well, published in 1585 in Paris (with the Roman name of Lutetia on the title page).

1863 EXQUISITE Common Prayer BIBLE Woodcut Queen Elizabeth Macabre Durer Holbein

An absolutely beautiful printing of the Book of Common Prayer from the Church of England. While editions of the Book of Common Prayer were printed for centuries before and after this edition, this printing is of particular value because of the impressive illustrations and illustrated borders.

While many of the illustrations are just decorative, some of the images are rather bizarre – such as the 'Psalms of David' which is bordered by skeletons and depictions of death in the style of Holbein and Durer! It also includes an allegorical view of Queen Elizabeth I.
