Hardcover. 5.5 inches x 3.75 inches. Printed by J. W. Woods. Original red cloth binding. Paper spine label. An early appeal for abolition in the United States by a Baltimore Methodist evangelical preacher and missionary who espoused this unpopular and dangerous view in a slave state three decades before slavery was abolished. Hersey was also employed by the American Colonization Society in the 1830s as an agent for the new colony of Liberia, and as noted in the later chapters of this volume, he advocates for American slaves to be relocated there under the auspices of the Society and funded by a weekly contribution of three cents by American churchgoers over the course of 30-40 years, "an achievement worthy of a free and Christian nation; and by far the greatest and the best legacy which we could… Read More

Description:
1866 1ed Jefferson Davis Prison Life Civil War Slavery Confederate President CSA

"A sympathetic account of Davis's confinement at Fortress Monroe; by the physician assigned to attend him; includes several long conversations." (Nevins)

A rare first edition of the "Prison Life of Jefferson Davis" by John Joseph Craven. According to Sabin, this first edition was printed on both small and large paper and includes a "Political Letter written to a Citizen of Illinois." This work also 'helped cement Davis's image as a Lost Cause martyr." (Boritt, Holzer). It was
"written by the physician in attendance during the imprisonment in Fortress Monroe…A kind of diary of the daily life, giving the gist of conversations. Written by a Union man, but sympathetic and forgiving. Unlikely to please the rabid element of either side." (Larned, Lit. of Am. History).
Includes full-page woodcut engraving of Davis in prison.

Description:
1864 Civil War 1st ed 60th New York Infantry Union Gettysburg SLAVERY Railroads
The 60th-New York Volunteer Infantry was a famous Civil War Union regiment known for playing an important role in various battles including the Battle of Gettysburg. Author Richard Eddy wrote an account of the regiment and its involvement in the war; however, according to Nevins, this work is much more a "damnation of the South and slavery than a regimental history." Other notable contents include reports on railroads and railroad lines, description of Union barracks, and of course descriptions of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
