Germanton [Germantown, Pennsylvania]: Gedruckt bey Leibert und Billmeyer, 1784. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Poor. 12mo. 252 pages. A small book measuring 5 3/4 inches tall by almost 3 1/2 inches wide. Hardcover bound in original leather-covered wooden boards. The binding is quite worn and stained. Chipping at the spine ends. The leather is chipped and is darkened on the rear cover (from having been damped) and is peeling up where it is chipped, revealing the wooden board beneath. The front pastedown is torn away, revealing the front wooden board. Lacks the clasp. Several signatures a bit sprung. There is a chip at the fore edge of the title page, affecting some of the lettering. The text is toned and stained. Bottom edge torn away from the bottom of the final leaf, but there does not appear to be text missing. Worldcat also notes 252 pages. Printed in "Old German" type. A scarce 18th century American Psalter written in German.

Woman writing to her child Francis. Describes her husband as being on an extended trip to New York for five weeks, so far. Mentions she told him to stop in Washington for the Inauguration, but he wanted to wait until after the crowd had left and the "rush attending the change of officers of the incoming administration." Then she mentions "I hope he will see Judge McLean who dissented from the opinion delivered by Chief Justice Taney in the Dred Scott case. It seems to me that opinion is to destroy all that has been done to check the growing evil of slavery." The Inauguration of President Buchanan was on March 4, 1857. OCLC shows ten holdings for this magazine, seven in the US. Clark addresses the criticisms that New Orleans and the area along the Mississippi is unhealthy and then documents the opportunities for immigrants to take advantage of the fertile land for raising sugarcane and cotton. He provides extensive details on the actual sales, expenses and large profits that were being made, almost all dependent on enslaved labor. The cost of enslaved people is shown as a business expense. Enslaved people were valued higher in Louisiana ($500) then in Virginia and Maryland ($280) because of the higher economic benefit of their labor in Louisiana.
