"Louise: here is a peculiar little book which I was suppose (sic) to review but couldn't think of anything to say about -- which is not to say I didn't like it. But it left me baffled. See what you think. It's coming out this month. Behave yourself. Either get rid of the whiskey or the scatter rugs. I know what I'd do. Love, (indecipherable first name signature - could be "Helen")." The front board has a faint rust mark left by a paperclip; otherwise it is an exceptionally clean, tight copy; the dustjacket has the upper corners just touched, mildly sunned spine and a shallow paperclip impression on the front panel upper edge - see scan. A digital photo of Golding with a UK bookseller at a 1992 booksigning event is laid-in RITES. RITES has two small indentations on the front pastedown upper corner with two corresponding impressions on the dustjacket flap and a small rubbed spot on the topedge which has caused a tiny nick on the topedge of a few text pages; the book is in Near Fine condition in a Near Fine dustjacket with an archival cover. CLOSE AND FIRE are both in Fine condition in a Fine dustajcket with an archival cover. RITES was the Booker winner in 1980. Includes Heaney's poem "An Evening at Killard" first published in 1969 by The Irish Press in their "New Irish Writers" series. Envelope is in Fine condition. (np): (np), 1973. Finished pencil drawing on 12 x 15 inch white poster board. Signed and dated "1973" and titled "Study for Tithymalian Landscape" by Moser at the bottom of the drawing. This drawing was done in preparartion for his wood engraving of the same name. Three small faint discolor spots (perhaps coffee spots) one of which is in the drawing, and faint toning along the top edge; reverse top left quarter has Moser's pencilled study-in-progress of a housefront facade.
