Dublin: Printed By and for Geo. Faulkner, 1744., 1744. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 12mo. Volume 3 only (of 4). Full calf, spine titled in gilt. Engraved frontispiece and six inserted plates (two are folding maps). In this copy the Contents pages (Signature 'A', 4 leaves) are bound at the rear between pages 300 / 301 (Leaves O4 / O5), and the final signature (headed: 'A Letter From Captain Gulliver To His Cousin Sympson' and terminating in a page of publisher's ads) is repeated; there are two copies of the signature bound in, one after the other. This final signature, signed "***" , was at the front of the volume in the 1735 edition, sans ads, and was placed immediately after the Contents pages; It is entirely re-set in this 1744 edition. Full calf, covers ruled in gilt, spine lettered and ruled in gilt. 316 pp. Some scuffing to edges and hinges, ownership signature and stamp at the head of the title page; a clean very good copy in general. Translated from the French work published in 1765: "La Philosophie de L'Histoire. Par feu l'Abbe Bazin." The book was published in French under the Bazin pseudonym to protect Voltaire from persecution, but this English edition appeared the following year under his own name. As in the Mcgill copy (Patrick Lee Collection), this copy has the page number '44' printed upside-down, and page number '93' printed as '39'. There was at least one edition in French published in London in 1765, but this 1766 edition appears to be the first in English..

Very good, with some wear to extremities, and lacking a pictorial cover illustration. Colour frontis. 304 pages, and 18 pages of publisher's ads. An important association copy, with a full page , handwritten dedication to Isabel Thorn, who is credited on the dedication page. Author's handwritten presentation on the front endpaper, also credits Thorn with helping to create Sanders and Bosambo. Three printed poems of Wallace are tipped to the front paste down, and the 2 endpapers, following the presentation inscription. The signature is dated " the day of the blockade, Feb. 18, 1915. This copy came from the library of Frederick Niven, who was married to Isabel Thorn's daughter, Mary. There are also some annotations to the Contents page, probably in Thorn's hand, but impossible to be sure..
