This presentation copy signed, "CLS from GLP March 1885." The handsome book is also signed "Louise Dervey With happy memories from C L Shaw May 1919." C. L. Description:
New York: John Low, 1817. First Edition . Full-Leather. Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Volume 2 of 2 volumes. Scarce early historical biographies of 27 figures - Pike, Lawrence, Perry, DeCatur, Jackson, Scott, Hull, Dearborn, et al. (Howes: Wilson, 538). First Edition. 320 pp. Full leather covers heavily rubbed & worn smooth . Red leather label with still readable gilt title on spine. Corners bumped with some loss of leather. Spine tattered and severly worn at head and tail. There is a split where front cover meets spine, but this doesn't seem to be affecting the integrity of the binding. While it hasn't yet occurred , the potential exists for detachment of the front board. The first f.e.p. has a one inch strip across the top of page neatly excised, probably from a previous owner removing their name. A previous owner's name neatly written in script on second f.e.p. Pages heavily browned from offsetting and foxing, but still very readable. The leaf… Read More
