This is also an association copy in that it was the property of Henry Baker Tristram (1822-1906), with signed presentation inscriptions in both volumes from the publisher, John Murray to Tristram, and Tristram's bookplate in each volume. Eleven-page dedication to the King; 206pp, 6 folding plates, an engraving of Charles II mounted with military formations deployed for battle and a fleet in the background as frontis. A detailed description on the constitution and operation of an army from a commander's viewpoint based on the author's considerable ECW experience. Includes a number of references to the ancients and also considerable discussion of the actual operations of the army in the field. A very nice example..

The endpapers appear to be newer but not recent, and there are a number of handwritten notes on slips of paper tipped onto several pages. Light wear to the edges of the binding, loss of a small part of the spine label of Vol. II. & IV, but overall a very nice copy. The title page has had a repair to the binding edge and has a smudge to the bottom of the title page, not affecting readability, and the name of a previous owner in ink appears discretely at the top of the title page. A very nice copy of the rare first English-language translation .

This is a richly illustrated account of the seiges of Flemish towns, with plans of their fortifications. The description of the sieges is divided into 24 parts, one for each town, in chronological order, from Menin in 1744 to Maastricht in 1748. Contemporary full calf/boards, expertly rebacked; spine with 6 raised bands, gilt lettering on two. All edges tinted red; marbled pastedown and free end papers. 1 folding map, 24 folding battle plans, all with minor hand colouring. Plan 21 is bound upside down. P. title, blank, (6), 1-113. Occasional dampstaining in the lower right corner of the pages, otherwise a very good to excellent copy, with crisp, clean maps. Text in French..
