London: Henry G. Bohn , 1842. Pale green cloth, with brown decoration. Everything between the front board and the final plate is completely detached and loose, but all seems to be present. Title page reads: "The Civil Costume of England, from the conquest to the present time. Drawn from tapestries, monumental effigies, illuminated manuscripts, portraits, etc. by Charles Martin. Etched by Leopold Martin. To which is added Hope's Costumes of the Ancients, 25 plates." Dedication to Prince Albert. 61 plates present, as called for in the list at the front, and 25 of ancient costume etc, not all with name of Hope, most, but not all, of costume. The cloth is quite worn; the plates, apart from a very few slight thumbmarks, some small corner creases, and two or three worn fore-edges, are in good condition. PLATES ARE UNCOLOURED.. Not Known. Stamp Islington Libraries on lower edge. Front hinge neatly reinforced with clear tape. New edition in attractive scarce dustwrapper. Not strictly all detective stories - Parker Pyne advertises that he makes people happy, some of the stories involve detection, others modifying people's lives, rather like one of Chesterton's Queer Trades.. Zeist : Not Known, 1839. 96 pages (if this is the enlarged edition, the original must have been tiny). Prayers & hymns; Dutch language. No publisher's name; just Zeist, 1839. Spine is worn, especially at lower end; boards are somewhat rubbed, with a couple of bits of paper stuck to the front; front hinge a little weak, but otherwise contents very good condition. Gift inscription in lovely 19th century hand - "Captain Roxburgh, a token of regard & remembrance from C. R. Kolbing [?], Missionary of the United Brethren's Church, Genadendel, 18 May 1845" Take this to be Genadendal, Moravian Mission Station at the Cape, the oldest mission station in South Africa, also site of first teachers' training college in South Africa.
