Thomas M. Disch's hugely popular children's novel The Brave Little Toaster first appeared in print in the August 1980 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction with cover art by Gahan Wilson six years before it was published in book form. It won the 1980 British Science Fiction Association Award for Best Short Fiction, the 1981 Locus Poll Award for Best Novelette, and the 1982 Seiun Award for Best Translated Short Story. It was also nominated for the Hugo, Nebula, and Balrog Awards and inspired an additional book and three children's movies. Disch published The Brave Little Toaster in an adult science fiction magazine after it was rejected by children's book publishers who thought the notion of appliances talking and having characters was just too far-fetched and children would not accept it. South Royalton, Vermont: Steerforth Press, 1996. Trade Paperback. First Paperback Edition (stated). Fine. Interior pristine. Spine straight, tight, and uncreased. Slight reading wear to lower corner. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. 436 pages. For a few years in the early 1960s the CIA seemed to be running a perfect covert war in Laos - quiet, inexpensive, just enough arms to help Meo (Hmong) tribesmen defend their home territory from the communist Pathet Lao. Then the big American war next door in Vietnam spilled across the border. How the perfect covert war ballooned into sorrow and disaster is the story Roger Warner tells in Shooting at the Moon, awarded the Cornelius Ryan Award for 1995's Best Book on Foreign Affairs by the Overseas Press Club. Warner describes his characters with a novelist's touch - soldiers and diplomats busy with war-making; CIA field officers from bareknuckle warriors to the quiet men pulling strings in the shadows; and above all the Meo as they realized… Read More

Bangkok: Asia Books, 2000. Trade Paperback. Third Edition, second printing, 2001. As New. Pristine inside and out. Not from a library. No remainder mark. 476 pages.
The Ravens were fighter pilots working as Forward Air Controllers for the Central Intelligence Agency in Laos during the Vietnam War, though their existence was denied by both the United States and North Vietnam. The Ravens undertook observation missions and were also tasked with marking enemy targets with smoke rockets to direct air strikes onto them. These deniable mercenary pilots had units based in five locations in Laos: Long Tieng, Luang Prabang, Pakse, Vientiane, and Savannakhet. The Ravens wore no uniform, carried no identification, and flew unarmed light aircraft which they would sold for a dollar apiece so that they could be struck from the US Air Force records.
