The author was an Army surgeon during the American Revolution and also served during the War of 1812. According to Rutkow GS4, this is probably the best and most vivid picture of early 19th century American military life. Garrison and Morton 2161.1 calls it "the primary… Read More

Lindbergh was an inventor, among his many other attributes. He, of course, is best known for winning the Orteig prize in 1927 by being the first aviator to fly non-stop from New York City to Paris. He became interested in keeping organs alive outside the body when his sister-in-law developed a fatal heart condition in 1930. He worked with Nobel-prize winning Alexis Carrel in the study of organ perfusion. He invented the "Model T" pump, a glass perfusion pump, that is credited with making future heart surgery possible. He and Carrel described an artificial heart in the book and their work with perfusion eventually led to the construction of the first heart-lung machine decades later. 221pp.. First Edition. Black Cloth. Very Mild Edgewear /No Dust Jacket as Issued. Medium Demi Octavo.
