Description:
London: Faber and Faber, 1983. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. First edition. Oblong octavo (9.75" x 10.5"); 128pp.; blue textured-paper boards, in dust jacket. Signed by both Hughes and Keen on the title page, and inscribed at length on the ffep by English fly fishing expert Dermot Wilson. Edges of boards faintly dust soiled, else about fine in a very good plus, price-clipped jacket, moderately toned and with some light crumpling along the top edges. Hughes and Keen met in 1976 at the suggestion of Hughes' second wife Carol, and quickly bonded over their shared love of fishing. Though conceived as a collaborative project soon after, according to Hughes scholar Ann Skea, the publication of "River" was delayed by several years as their agent worked to find a publisher willing to commit to high-quality color reproductions. Faber eventually brought the book out in an edition of 2,500 hardcover and 15,000 paperback copies, with Hughes' poems on the verso and… Read More

Description:
Tokyo: Fukutake Pub. Co., Ltd., 1986. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Four volumes. All oblong octavo octavo (12" x 8.5") in glossy illustrated paper boards, with matching dust jackets; all are first editions save No. 2, which we believe is a sixth printing. Unpaginated (each volume ~30pp.). Text in Japanese. All four volumes include laid-in folded sheets with English-language translations by Susan Matsui; N.B. No. 2 incorrectly includes the translation sheet for a different title in the series. All are identically signed, dated, and inscribed by Yoshida opposite the title page to a former owner, believed to be American jewelry artist Linda MacNeil (although we have been unable to confirm that provenance). Yoshida (1911-1995) was a Japanese artist best known for his woodblock prints in the shin-hanga style he learned from his father, printmaker Hiroshi Yoshida, under whose shadow Yoshida labored for much of his career. Following his father's death in 1950, Yoshida finally felt… Read More

Description:
NY: E.P. Dutton & Co., 1969. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Fine. A rare signed example of this compelling work of cryptozoology by the Argentinian master: an alphabetical compendium of 120 imaginary beasts culled from various literary and world-historical sources. As in many of his best-known works, Borges here takes an existing literary form--the medieval bestiary--and imbues it with new dimension through a variety of quintessentially Borgesian tactics. These include satire, tonal experiments, and the inclusion of entries that push at the limits of what we might consider fantastical beasts ("An Animal Imagined by Kafka," "Animals in the Form of Spheres," etc.). The result is uniquely hybrid text, as much a work about cultural history and the boundaries of the human imagination as it is about imaginary beings themselves. First English-language edition, following Spanish-language editions of 1957 and 1967. Here newly revised and enlarged by Borges and the translator,… Read More

Description:
London: Victor Gollancz, 1980. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Exquisite first edition of this important work of Soviet science fiction, signed by both of the Strugatsky brothers. A symbolically complex novel whose parallel narratives deal with intertwined themes of (bureaucratic) order and (natural) chaos on an alien world dominated by a seemingly endless forest. In an essay included as afterword to the 2018 translation published by University of Chicago Press, Boris Strugatsky acknowledged this as the brothers' "most complete and important work." Nonetheless, the work had a troubled early history, with its suggestive ambiguities earning the ire of censors in Russia, where for decades it could only be found in heavily expurgated forms. Samizdat copies, meanwhile, made their way to the West, allowing for translations of the complete text such as this one by Alan Meyers. First British (and first hardcover) edition. Signed by both Arkady and Boris Strugatsky on the front free… Read More

Description:
Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1976. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. Signed and inscribed second printing (in first edition jacket) of Maclean's collection of semi-autobiographical short fiction, a now-classic of Western literature and fly fishing, whose title novella formed the basis for the 1992 Robert Redford-directed film of the same name. Maclean's inscription, on the front endpaper, reads: "University of Chicago, / April 15, 1979. / To Bobby: / With deep affection and best wishes. / Norman". Although we can only guess at the identity of the inscribee--perhaps a former colleague at the University of Chicago, or a friend at the Press--Maclean's warm inscription and use of first name only suggests that the two were quite close. Octavo (5.75 x 8.75 in.); xiv, 217pp.; blue cloth boards, silver spine lettering. Second printing, as designated by number line and corrected ISBN on copyright page (but with the uncorrected misprinting of "always" as… Read More

Description:
Uppingham: Goldmark, 1978. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine/Fine. An eminently desirable association copy of the limited edition of Sinclair's first novel, a heady, unhinged mash-up of book trade roman à clef and time-bending Jack the Ripper occultism. In addition to the called-for signatures of Sinclair and artist Rigby Graham, this copy has also been signed by one of the book's two dedicatees, guitarist and legendary bookscout Martin Stone. Stone inhabits the novel as the lightly fictionalized character Nicholas Lane. He was also a friend and mentor to Sinclair during Sinclair's own quite successful bookscouting career. In a paean published in the Independent in 1995, Sinclair even went so far as to say of Stone, "Without him, I'd never have found the path into Whitechapel for my first novel." Number 19 in a limited edition of 100 copies signed by Sinclair and artist Rigby Graham on limitation page at rear. With Martin Stone's signature penned below his name on… Read More

Description:
NY: James Pott & Company, 1906. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine. First edition of this important collection of autobiographies by working-class and mostly immigrant Americans at the turn of the twentieth century. Exploitation, cruelty, and prejudice (including often the authors' own) are common themes: a French dressmaker is swindled out of her money at Ellis island; a Greek peddler must pay large bribes to the police; a farmer's wife's literary ambitions are stifled by her autocratic husband and small-minded friends. Yet the stories as a whole are recounted with striking equanimity, and are remarkable both in candor and lack of sentimentality. As explained by Edwin E. Slosson in his introduction, two methods were used in gathering the accounts: "first and preferably, to have the life written upon his own initiative by the person who lived it; second . . . to have the story written from interviews, and then read to and approved by the person telling it." The volume's… Read More

Description:
NY: Doubleday & Company, 1969. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First American edition of Disch's celebrated New Wave science fiction novel, a dystopic riff on the Faust legend and imperialistic American military policy; as inscribed by him to New York School poet, librettist, and publisher Kenward Elmslie (1929-2022). Disch, a poet as well as a novelist, was an active participant in the New York poetry scene, his work represented in Adventures in Poetry and other contemporary journals; he and Elmslie surely had a more than passing social relationship. The quotation in Disch's inscription repeats a line from Elmslie's book-length poem The Champ (Black Sparrow Press, 1968). In 1971, Disch was to include a chapter from Elmslie's novel-in-progress, The Orchid Stories, in his anthology of speculative fiction, The Ruins of Earth. NY: Doubleday & Company, 1969. First edition. 184pp. 8vo. Black cloth; orange spine titles; dust jacket, featuring design by Saul Lambert.… Read More

Wraps toned, irregularly to rear. Bump with attendant cover creases to bottom leading corner. Some hinge wear. Very good. Inscribed by Schuyler on the title page: "for KGE - more from The Black Trunk - love, Jimmy." From the library of New York School poet, librettist, and publisher Kenward Elmslie (1929-2022), as inscribed to him. Schuyler's third book of poems, published by Tibor de Nagy, the art gallery whose publishing wing was of vital support to the first generation of New York School poets. Schuyler and Elmslie enjoyed a long and at times tempestuous friendship. In 1964, the two collaborated on a one-act play, Unpacking the Black Trunk, to which Schuyler's inscription here makes reference. Schuyler was a frequent visitor to Elmslie's Calais, Vermont summer home, Poet's Corner, and set… Read More

Tokyo: Shashin Hyoron-sha, 1972. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good/Very Good. Tokyo: Shasin Hyoron-sha, 1972. First edition. 4to. Signature-bound in printed wraps; stiff dust jacket. 308pp. Creasing to the mildly cocked spine (binding remains secure); small tape ghosts to interior covers. Jacket lightly rubbed, with wear at spine ends. A very good copy of the Provoke co-founder's landmark 1972 work, both a gesture of profound artistic despair and a radical challenge to the representational and material nature of photography, which cemented Moriyama's distinctive aesthetic and is widely regarded as one of the most influential Japanese photobooks of the 20th century. Scarce in the trade and institutionally; our OCLC search efforts locate just nine holdings.
