'CAROTID CORNUCOPIUS: The first 4 fitts making "One Quart" by Gude Schir Skidderie Smithereens of Crankmirligo.' Blue paper-covered boards with title printed in black. Presentation copy from the author with eight line handwritten inscriptions by Sydney Goodsir Smith on front endpaper. This is the 1947 first edition with a limited run of just 300 copies. Frontispiece illustrated with print of an auk. 80 pages. Sydney Goodsir Smith was a poet, critic and journalist who is best remembered for his contribution to the 20th century revival of poetry in the Scots language. Discolouration around edges of cover and some wear to extremities. A scarce title from a truly eccentric writer.

Red cloth with gold gilt lettering to front cover and spine. A very rare title as evidenced by this being the only copy available on the Internet. Gilt to all page edges. Undated but circa late 1800s. A very good copy. 66 pages. No dust jacket as issued. Shelf wear to all extremities and neat previous owner name to front endpaper. The book contains an allegorical poem concerning Providence, Blasphemy, Atheism, Infidelity, Wisdom and Inspiration. The author also wrote 'A Key to Truth, Superseding Darwinism by a Theory of Atomic Force', 'The Rise and Reign of Chaos, A Scientific Epic' and 'The Spectral Rock, A Poem'. This is the only example of this title available on the internet.

This is the true first edition of 1958, Michael Joseph published an American edition one year later in 1959 with the same dust jacket design. A scarce book as a first edition and a rare book with dust jacket. 'Storm in the Village' is the third of Miss Read's Fairacre books.
