Rare books from Banjo Booksellers

Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1861. BAL 8801. Probable Second Printing of Volume I, per BAL's points of issue. Volume II has inserted catalog dated February, 1861. In original brown cloth with blindstamped decorations on the boards and gilt lettering on the spine. Inscribed and signed in ink by the author on the second free front endpaper of Volume I. Also signed in pencil by two early owners on the same page. Both volumes are in similar condition. The spines lean somewhat and are worn at the spine ends and the corners. Volume I has a 1/2" triangular chip at the spine head. One leaf (pp. 175-176 has a torn-off piece (mostly blank). The piece is layed in. The hinges and joints are sound. Two of the gatherings in Volume II are loose but the stitching is still in place. The boards are lightly scuffed. . Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. 1818. Manuscript. Good. No Binding. Signed by Author(s). This is 16.5" by 20.5" military commission to Mr. Henry Burr to be "duly appointed Gent. Brigade Inspector of Infantry in the Militia of this [ ] with the rank of Major." Oliver Wolcott, Esquire, is described as "Captain-General and Commander in Chief, in and over the State of Connecticut in , The United States of America." It is dated the twentieth day of July, A.D. 1818, and signed Oliver Wolcott. There is an embossed paper seal of the State of Connecticut, evidently hand-cut with serrations around its edge, and affixed to the document. It is a printed form document, on cream-colored paper, with blanks filled in by hand, and hand signed by Wolcott. It is folded multiple times, and has separated into two halves. A blank section of one of these halves is also separated, but present. There is evidence that the two halves were taped together at one time..

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1894. First printing (same date on TP and CP and no additional printings listed). Wright III 4659. Blue cloth with gilt titles and decoration on the spine. The spine is slanted. Some scuffing to the boards. There is a small area of discoloration on the front board. Light shelfwear, with corners bumped. Previous owner's name is on the front free endpaper. The binding is gapped at pp 224-225, with a tiny bit of mesh visible. Otherwise a sound binding.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1999. "This edition of Eloise: The Absolutely Essential Edition has been specially bound and is limited to two hundred and fifty copies signed by the illustraor and numbered". This copy is number 72. Signed by Hilary Knight on the limitation page. "Including the Original Eloise and a new, color Eloise Scrapbook with rare photos & drawings from the files of Hilary Knight". A beautiful copy; essentially as new. In a near fine slipcase with a tiny tear at the lower front corner and very light soiling.. Signed by Illustrator. Limited. Hard Cover. Fine/No Jacket. Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1850. One of 2,500 copies published of this true first edition, on 16 March 1850, according to C.E. Frazier Clark Jr.'s definitive "Nathaniel Hawthorne - A Descriptive Bibliography". Number A16.1 in Clark's bibliography and number 7600 in BAL. This copy is in the following states and sub-states, again as described by Clark: Binding: in the style of Ticknor format A. Brown bold-ribbed T cloth with blind-stamped floral device inside ruled panels on both covers. Spine gold-stamped. Cream-colored wove endpapers. The contents are listed on pp. iii-iv and there is no preface. This is a key indicator of the first edition versus the second edition, which includes a preface. The other variants between the first and second editions are also present. These consist of sixty-nine typographical and spelling errors and punctuation changes throughout the text. Moderate shelfwear with frayed spine ends. The spines are a bit darkened. Previous owner's name, dated 1882, is written on both front free endpapers, along with that of a later owner. Vol 1 has a gutter crack at pg. 273. Both volumes have short tears in the cloth at the rear joints.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

The spine is slightly slanted. The top edge is dust-spotted. Otherwise fine. The dust jacket has light edgewear, with frayed spine ends. The rear panel is lightly soiled. Light shelfwear, with frayed spine ends. The cloth has a 2" tear along the rear joint. The front hinge is just starting to crack. In an otherwise tight binding.. First American Edition. Hard Cover. Philadelphia: John C. Winston Company, 1941. First printing (no additional printings listed). Lightly bumped and worn at the spine ends and corners. The spine is slightly slanted. (Wright also mentions a (presumably later) 147 p. version printed in double columns). Rust-colored embossed cloth with gilt spine lettering. Moderate shelfwear, with frayed spine ends. The spine is slanted. There is a short tear on the rear hinge. Previous owner's name is penciled on the second free endpaper. Some leaves have small dampstains on their fore margins. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

New York & London: Alfred a Knopf, 1929. Third edition "completely revised". 754 pp. including index. The blue boards are faded around the edges and spine. Otherwise fine: Unmarked and in a tight binding with hinges intact. The dust jacket has light edge wear, including a 1/4" chip at the spine head. The spine and edges are tanned. This is the true first printing of this title: it is the last listed on the front flap of the dust jacket and also on the copyright page; and "Big Dirigible" (#33) is the last listing in the advertising at the back. A fine, unmarked copy in a tight binding. The dust jacket is chipped at the spine ends and corners. Torn along the front flap fold. Shorter tears elsewhere.
