Tipped-in on rear endpaper is is a mimeographed typed transcription of a letter from Johnston to Col. Thomas B. Kennedy dated Nov. 6, 1904. In it he recounts the several episodes in the book where they had encountered each other in California, at the end of the letter he says he printed 217 copies to give to friends and that this copy to Kennedy would be one of his last. Tipped into the rear pastedown is another typed transcription of a letter dated May 15 '49, from W.T. Kennedy to E. Wilkins Davidson Philadelphia, it recounts his journey from Missouri to California as he set out to catch up with Joseph and Thomas Kennedy (presumed relatives) and ends as the finally meet up in California.
