Quotations From Chairman Mao Tse-Tung

By Tse-Tung, Mao

Quotations from Chairman Mao Zedong, better known in the West as The Little Red Book, was published by the Government of the People's Republic of China from April 1964 until approximately 1976. As its title implies, it is a collection of quotations excerpted from Mao Zedong's past speeches and publications. The book's alternative title The Little Red Book was coined by the West for its pocket-sized edition, which was specifically printed and sold to facilitate easy carrying.

QUOTATIONS FROM CHAIRMAN MAO TSE-TUNG. [Pinyin: MAO ZHU XI YU LU]

MAO, Tse-tung.

Peking 1966, Foreign Language Press. Red vinyl cover, 311p., clean copy, 9.3 x 13.5 cm., English text, Mao frontis photo, title & 2 pages stamped: "China Books D.O.J. WARNING" FIRST EDITION, SECOND PRINTING ! VERY RARE DOJ BANNED ITEM ! *** *** THE INFAMOUS MAO'S "LITTLE RED BOOK" A RARE FIRST EDITION FIRST PRINTING This is the title carried by the new movement sanctioned by Mao and Lin Biao at the August 16, 1966 mass rally in Tiananmen Square [Chinese language version]. That day, the Chinese "HONG WEI BING" ["RED GUARDS"] and the CHINESE "CULTURAL REVOLUTION" ["DA GEMING WENWHA"] was born and sanctioned officially by Mao and Lin Biao. This book was the "Holy Grail" to the "Red Guards" and carried by them as an expression of devotion and loyalty to Chairman Mao. Many of the young students had a tiny red cotton shoulder bags used to carry the book. These had yellow characters stenciled on it with the slogan "MAO ZHU XI MAN SUI" ["Long Live Chairman Mao"]. Please inquire with us, we have the rare originals in stock! THE BEGINNING OF THE AMERICAN STUDENT ANTI-VIETNAM WAR MOVEMENT & THE "LITTLE RED BOOK" American University Students in the fall of 1966 began to carry the book the U.S. Department of Justice just 'banned' and 'unapproved.' With the first controversial imports of this title university students throughout America flaunted this book at anti-Vietnam war campus demonstrations vexing administrators and local police called in to subdue the students. DIFFICULTY IN DISTINGUISHING THE TRUE FIRST EDITION: This is a copy of Mao's famous and iconographic "LITTLE RED BOOK." It consists of famous quotations from Chairman Mao. WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES THE FIRST EDITION FIRST PRINTING RIGHT: There are Two Editions of the First Edition: The FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING: Published in English circa [June-July 1966] ONLY HAS THE CALLIGRAPHY PAGE BY LIN BIAO, which follows the portrait of Chairman Mao. On the verso of that page, it reads: "Study Chairman Mao's writings, follow his teachings and act according to his instructions. Lin Biao." Followed by the "CONTENTS" page. [There is NO FOREWORD BY LIN BIAO!] THE SECOND PRINTING, also has the calligraphy page by Lin Biao, but the following page has: "THE FOREWORD TO THE SECOND EDITION OF QUOTATIONS FROM CHAIRMANMAO TSE-TUNG [December 16, 1966] Lin Biao, which is [4] un-paginated pages, following that is the "Contents" page. If these Lin Biao Foreword pages are pulled out to deceive the buyer into thinking it is the FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, please examine the red vinyl plastic covers. The inside of the Second Printing December 16, 1966 issue has a semi-circular or 3 curved lines like a "fan" going vertical inside the front cover near the hinge, and the same "fan" pattern inside the back cover, also going vertical along the hinge side and also horizontal at the top of the inside of the back cover small 'note' pocket. The First Edition, First Printing vinyl does not have the "fan" pattern anywhere. It uses a different design which are small straight lines about 3 cm. wide like a railroad track, or dashes vertical along the hinge side of the front and back covers, and also at the top of the pocked in the rear covers. Otherwise they 'look' very similar. Please view our website photos of both books and the major differences, posted to our site as illus08.jpg. The top example is the First Edition, First printing, the lower is the Second printing. The Chinese colophons are identical, stating: 5 Chinese characters: MAO ZU SHI. Our illus07.jpg shows the two variant examples of the First Edition, First Printing, the one on the right side is the most common example. *** *** THE BEGINNING OF THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION AND THE RED GUARDS: "THE HONG WEI BING" CARRY CHAIRMAN MAO'S 'LITTLE RED BOOK' IN A MASS DEMONSTRATION OF LOYALTY TO CHAIRMAN MAO "On 18 August, 1966 at Tiananmen Square. Chairman Mao appeared atop the podium, wearing an olive green military uniform, the type favored by "Red Guards," but which he had not worn in many years. He personally greeted 1,500 Red Guards and waved to 800,000 other "Red Guards" in the audience and onlookers below. The rally was led by Chen Boda, and Lin Biao gave a keynote speech. "Red Guard" leaders led by Nie Yuanzi also gave speeches. A high school Red Guard put a red arm band inscribed with the characters for "RED GUARD" ["HONG WEI BING"] on the Chairman's left arm, he stood there for six hours. The "Red Guards" waving their "LITTLE RED BOOK" chanting loudly "MAO ZHUXI MAN SUI" ["LONG LIVE CHAIRMAN MAO !"] The "8-18" [August 8, 1966] rally, as it was known, was the first of eight receptions the Chairman gave to "Red Guards" in Tiananmen in the fall of 1966. It was this rally that signified the beginning of the Red Guards' involvement in implementing the aims of the "Cultural Revolution." The second rally, held on 31 August, 1966 was led by Kang Sheng and Lin Biao who also donned a "Red Guard" arm bands, demonstrating support for the "HONG WEI BING." The last rally was held on 26th November 1966. In all, the Chairman greeted eleven to twelve million "Red Guards," most of whom traveled from afar to attend the rallies." Extracted from Wikipedia, citation below. "LITTLE RED BOOK" This book 800,000 "Red Guards" carried their "QUOTATIONS FROM CHAIRMAN MAO" [aka. "LITTLE RED BOOK"] to Tienanmen Square and held it up calling "LONG LIVE CHAIRMAN MAO." This was the official beginning of the "CULTURAL REVOLUTION," and official sanction for the action of the reign of terror launched by the "Red Guards." MAO TSE-TUNG: commonly referred to as "Chairman Mao" or the "Great Helmsman" [December 26, 1893 -September 9, 1976], was a Chinese Communist revolutionary, guerrilla warfare strategist, Marxist political philosopher, and leader of the Chinese Revolution. He was the architect and founding father of the People's Republic of China [PRC] from its establishment in 1949, and held control over the nation until his death in 1976. His theoretical contribution to Marxism-Leninism, along with his military strategies and brand of policies, are collectively known as Maoism. LIN BIAO: [December 5, 1907 -September 13, 1971) was a major Chinese Communist military leader who was pivotal in the communist victory in the Chinese Civil War, especially in Northeastern China. Lin was the general who commanded the decisive Liaoshen Campaign and Pingjin Campaign, co-led the Northeast battlefield army of the People's Liberation Army into Beijing, and crossed the Yangtze River in 1949. He ranked third among the Ten Marshals. THE LIN BIAO INCIDENT: "Lin Biao incident" Lin died when a plane carrying him and several members of his family crashed in Mongolia on September 13, 1971, allegedly after attempting to assassinate Mao and defect to the Soviet Union. Following Lin's death, there has been widespread skepticism in the West concerning the official Chinese explanation, but forensic evidence conducted by the USSR (which recovered the bodies following the crash) has confirmed that Lin was among those who died in the crash. At this time Lin was posthumously "purged" many copies after 1971 were not published with his calligraphy or foreword. Other older copies in China were also "purged" of his calligraphy and foreword from this and any other book with his photo, comments or calligraphy. This by and large only applies to Chinese language copies, foreign language copies were mostly exported abroad and not found often in China. See Wikipedia below. SPECIAL U.S. DEPTARTMENT OF JUSTICE STAMPED COPY NOTE: Regarding the copy with the below details, please confirm the exact copy you want. The copy we have with the stamp or stamps below is the First Edition, Second Printing, and quite rare, even though the U.S. Dept. of Justice stamped all imported copies by the "China Books" large numbers were destroyed by police who found them on demonstrators during the anti-Vietnam war period. Many American students carried this :"Little Red Book" taunting the police and school officials. Confiscation was common, these are now R A R E ! A VERY RARE COPY SHOWING THE CONCERN OF THE U.S. DEPT. OF JUSTICE CONCERNING THIS BOOK: On the third page of "Contents" The U.S. DEPT. OF JUSTICE stamped all copies imported by China Books of San Francisco, the following statement: CONTROVERSIAL SUBJECT CONTENT: CONTROLLED BY THE U.S. GOVERNMENT: DUE TO THE Controversial AND ANTI-AMERICAN CONTENT OF THIS BOOK, IT IS HEREBY NOTED THAT COPIES WHICH CAME FROM "CHINA BOOKS," IN SAN FRANCISCO WERE STAMPED ON THE TITLE PAGE WITH "CHINA BOOKS, SHOWING THIER NAME AND ADDRESS. And a good number had another stamp on the last page of contents: "A copy of this material has been filed with the Foreign Agents Registration Section, Department of Justice, Washington D.C. where the registration statement of China Books & Periodicals, 2929 24th St. San Francisco 10, Calif., as an agent of the Guozi Shudian of Peking, China, is available for inspection. The fact of registration does not indicate approval of this material by the Government of the United States." Please see photo illus09.jpg posted to our website. Please check with us to see which copy we have in stock today. CHAIRMAN MAO: The end of the "CULTURAL REVOLUTION " AND THE END OF THE "HONG WEI BING" In 1969, Mao declared the "Cultural Revolution" to be over, although various historians in and outside of China mark the end of the "Cultural Revolution" as a whole or in part in 1976, following the demise of Mao. In the last years of his life, Mao was faced with declining health. Because the "Red Guards" became independent and opposed even Mao and his army attacks upon them, Mao sent the army to find and kill a large number of insurgent "Red Guards" who objected to being controlled and dissolved. Many "unmarked" cemeteries are found in China full of young "Red Guards" who opposed Mao, ironic death in the end ! NOTE: Please visit our website for more items by and about Chinese Red guards [Hong Wei Bing], Mao, Mao badges and related items on the Cultural Revolution.
