New York: Random House, 1952. VG/G. Random House Play 1st/1st. Lyrics by Lorenz Hart, music by Richard Rodgers. First Edition. Stated First Printing. The book is tight and square with solid hinges and good tips. Cloth binding is clean with pictorial pastedown on the cover. Textblock is clean with no writing, bookplate, or markings and not BCE, ex-library or remaindered. The pages are moderately age-toned. B&W photos from the 1952 Broadway play. The fragile dust jacket is unclipped ($2.50) and Good. Age-toned with chips to the spine ends and corners and closed tears to the top front and back panels (see photos). Protected in a new Brodart Mylar cover.
Pal Joey is the penultimate collaboration of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. It was the first musical to focus on an unlikely hero as the lead and features such classic songs such as "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered".
Smooth-talking and cocky, Joey Evans maneuvers his way into owning his own nightclub. He does so by manipulating and juggling the affections of several women, one of whom is Vera Simpson, a wealthy, married socialite. Smitten, Vera begins to bankroll Joey's new club, Chez Joey, until a crooked agent threatens to tell Vera's husband about her affair. Joey gets a taste of his own medicine when Vera dumps him and cuts the funding for his club. He lands on his feet, without learning anything from his failure, and continues his scheming ways.
