Out Of Africa

By Dinesen, Isak

Out of Africa is a memoir by Isak Dinesen, a nom de plume used by the Danish author Baroness Karen von Blixen-Finecke. The book, first published in 1937, recounts events of the seventeen years when Blixen made her home in Kenya, then British East Africa. The book is a lyrical meditation on Blixen’s life on her coffee plantation, as well as a tribute to some of the people who touched her life there. It is also a vivid snapshot of African colonial life in the last decades of the British Empire.

Out of Africa

Dinesen, Isak

New York: Random House, 1938 First American edition. This is the true first edition (so stated) with the true first issue dust jacket, with the price shown on the upper front flap. [1], 389pp. Publisher's coated black cloth spine, gilt, rust cloth sides with gilt bird on front cover. A bit of minor spotting to cloth spine, but a fine copy with pictorial dust jacket (jacket lightly chipped at spine ends). A classic memoir, which recounts events of the seventeen years when Blixen made her home in Kenya. From 1914 to 1931, Danish aristocrat Baroness Karen Blixen owned and operated a coffee plantation in Kenya. After the plantation failed, she returned to Europe and began to write under the pen name Isak Dinesen. Out of Africa reads like a collection of stories in which she adheres to no strict chronology, gives no explanation of the facts of her life, and apologizes for nothing. Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 greatest works of nonfiction of the twentieth century and the basis for the film directed by Sydney Pollack, starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, which went on to win seven Academy Awards..

Out of Africa.

Dinesen, Isak.

New York:: Random House,, 1938. . A Fine tight copy in a Very Good plus unclipped dust jacket with a small chip to the bottom edge of the front panel and a touch of wear to the spine. Otherwise a very collectible copy of this classic memoir of author Dinesen's life in Africa. Dinesen gives a true account of her life on her plantation in Kenya. She tells with classic simplicity of the ways of the country and the natives: of the beauty of the Ngong Hills and coffee trees in blossom: of her guests, from the Prince of Wales to Knudsen, the old charcoal burner, who visited her: of primitive festivals: of big game that were her near neighbors--lions, rhinos, elephants, zebras, buffaloes--and of Lulu, the little gazelle who came to live with her, unbelievably ladylike and beautiful. .

Publisher's rust-colored cloth over black spine, stamped in gilt with gilt illustration of a flamingo to front board, top edge stained green; in the original pictorial dust jacket with an illustration of a dense jungle scene. About near fine with light toning to page edges and gilt very slightly dimmed, particularly to the front board, magazine article about Isak Dinesen tipped in to rear endpapers; in a very good unclipped dust jacket with light wear to extremities and toning to spine with a few tiny chips to spine head. Out of Africa is the memoir of Baroness Karen von Blixen-Finecke, a Danish author who published many of her works under the pseudonym Isak Dinesen, and is based on the author's experience living in Kenya when it was controlled by the British Empire. It offers a unique glimpse at life in colonial East Africa. Interestingly, while this first American edition credits Isak Dinesen on its dust jacket, the first English edition cites Karen Blixen as the author. In 1985, Out of Africa was adapted into a film of the same name starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep under the direction of Sydney Pollock.. First American Edition.. Hard Cover.
