INSOMNIA

Miller, Henry

LoUJON Miller, Henry. INSOMNIA, OR THE DEVIL AT LARGE. Albuquerque: Loujon Press, 1970. First Edition and one of only 20 sets issued in a 23 by 18 inch orange clamshell case as a memorial and fundraiser for the publisher. Loujon Press was the creation and labor of love of John Edgar Webb and his wife Gypsy Lou Webb. This issue includes: a spiralbound book (4to) in foil wrapper; portfolio of 12 color lithographed reproductions of Miller watercolors; special frontis and colophon leaf; limited edition portrait of Henry Miller by Giovanapoulos (not included in other issues) and here signed and numbered #17 of 30; plus a manuscript note from Mrs. Webb affixed to the inside of the clamshell. In a production with a very complicated history, including an issue of approximately 300 distributed in a custom wooden box, this "super-limited" distribution of 20 in a clamshell box would seem to be the most desireable to collectors.. Signed. FIRST. Book.

INSOMNIA: Or, The Devil at Large

Miller, Henry

Albuquerque, NM: Loujon Press, 1970. First edition, limited issue, this one being number 10 of "99" copies in "Edition F" (there were actually 65 at most, see below) with twelve loose watercolor prints, THREE of which are SIGNED AND DATED 10/15/70 BY MILLER, as called for [Shifreen & Jackson A175f]. The three prints SIGNED BY MILLER are "Insomnia No. 1" (8/3/66); "Insomnia No. 2" (8/22/66); and "2nd Insomnia Series, No. 1" (5/8/67). Large, elaborate production; housed in decorative wooden box measuring approximately 24 x 19 x 1.5" with sliding wood cover (actually wood paneling, smooth side up) illustrated with photograph of Miller and wife "Hoki" beneath which is affixed an antiqued copper plate engraved "Ed. F." Each of the TWELVE COLOR PRINTS is printed on heavy artist's paper and measures approximately 22.5 x 17.5". Also includes a large, heavy card stock title sheet and the book itself -- another elaborate production of plain, comb-bound boards with foil paper dust jacket (made from wall paper?); in facsimile manuscript and illustrated with photographs throughout. "Edition F" was initially planned for 192 copies and later reduced to 99, Shifreen & Jackson estimate that NO MORE THAN 65 COPIES WERE ACTUALLY PRODUCED and that ONLY 300 WOODEN BOXES WERE EVER CONSTRUCTED for the total edition (note to Shifreen & Jackson A175a, p.408). The book and prints are best described by Miller's daughter, Valentine, on her tribute website: "In the mid 60s Dad became infatuated by a cabaret singer from Japan named Hoki Tokuda. He would spend hours at the piano bar in the Imperial Gardens Restaurant in Hollywood, listening to Hoki sing. He eventually wooed and married her. In 1965-6 he got insomnia worrying about the relationship and wrote a small book called Insomnia or the Devil at Large and during those sleepless nights painted a dozen watercolors, the Insomnia series." Light finger smudges to half-title sheet, otherwise book, prints, and box are all fine.

Insomnia,; or the Devil at Large

Miller, Henry

Albuquerque: Loujon Press, 1970. First edition. Wraps. Fine with some slight marking and a bit of rumpling to box-label.. 4to, unpag.; comb-bound in stiff white wrappers, decorative foil dust jacket. The book is housed in the original foam-lined wood box with sliding lid bearing photographic label, together with 12 color lithographs from Miller's "Insomnia Watercolors" and publisher's two-sided broadside announcement, inscribed briefly by Jon Webb. One of 385 copies from the so-called Edition G, bearing the original subscriber's name plate on the box-lid. This elaborate production was a struggle for the publishers Jon and Louise Webb, who scrambled to fulfill orders, altering their original conception as they went. Initially far fewer copies of Edition G were planned, but when orders for the more expensive issued failed to come in, they increased the number to 385. The boxes were all made by hand and when Jon Webb died during production, it became impossible to create boxes for the entire edition.

Insomnia,; or The Devil at Large

Miller, Henry

Albuquerque, New Mexico: Loujon Press, 1970. First edition. Fine. 4to, unpag.; comb-bound with stiff backing board and loosely inserted into decorative metallic wrappers, printed with an abstract floral design in orange, yellow, and black on gold. With loose set of twelve large prints reproducing Miller's paintings done for the publication. One of a stated 385 copies in the so-called "Edition G", signed by Miller at the colophon and dated May 1, 1970. As with other Loujon Press publications, it is marked by an over-the-top mixture of various fonts, papers, and images, and with Miller's text in lithographic reproduction of his handwriting. The publication was beset by difficulties, resulting in a confusion of issues and unreliable colophonic information. Some of the various editions would be housed in hand-made wooden boxes by publisher Jon Webb. When he died during production, that was no longer possible and this copy is among those that remained unboxed.
