Harper's Weekly: A Journal of Civilization. Volume XX (April 15, 1876-December 30, 1876)

Harper’s Weekly

Folio (12x16), leather spine & tips with cloth, illustrated, 301-1068 pp. Spine and covers heavily worn and scuffed, with a few tears at extremities, missing front endpaper, and rear endpaper is folded, some foxing and aging, especially first few pages, contents generally clean and in good shape. Despite the fact that this is not a complete year, this is a very rich volume. There are a large number of illustrations by Thomas Nast; many are full page. One of the highlights of this volume is Custer's showdown with the Sioux at the Little Big Horn (see pages 592, 598, 601 and 609). The coverage contains a map of the events, and even a full page cartoon by Thomas Nast poking fun at a proposal to reduce the size of the army. There is also material on the Ku Klux Klan, Chinese emigration, and a tragic Brooklyn theatre fire that killed hundreds of people. Coverage of the American Centennial is also included. Extra postage is required.

Harper's Weekly: A Journal of Civilization. Volume XLII (January 1, 1898-January 7, 1899)

Harper’s Weekly

Thick folio, leather spine and corners, illustrated. Covers detached and several front and rear pages are attached to covers, which makes volume partially disbound, volume is heavy and thick, which put too much pressure on joints and binding, missing upper portion of backstrip, binding worn in places; internally bright and clean. Rather scarce edition of Harper's that is packed with photographs and illustrations. Good coverage of the Spanish American War. A few illustrations by Remington, and since this volume actually includes the first week of 1899, the first part of a series by H.G. Wells, "When the Sleeper Wakes", is included. There is also a Stockton story, which has some color illustrations in the 1898 Christmas issue, but pagination is incorrect. Like other copies it shows pages 1235-1239 as missing, however, the story and volume are complete. Photographs of Pope Leo XIII and the Harvard football team can also be found in this volume.Extra postage required.

Harper's Weekly (Volume I, No. 1, January 3, 1857)

Harper's Weekly (FIRST ISSUE)

New York: Harper's, 1857. Original, complete and disbound issue. Very good condition with moderate fading, a short tear to the foredge of some pages and clear tape reinforcement to edges of pages. A rare first issue of one of the finest and longest running weekly newspapers in American history. This first issue sets the tone for those to come by having a variety of pieces--a long editorial, this time on the need for American unity (remember, this is pre-Civil War), new inventions (an oven in New York City that can "turn 500 barrels of flour daily into a proportionate number of loaves of bread," topical poems ("A Rhyme for the Atlantic Telegraph" by Martin F. Tupper and "Christmas, 1856"), social commentary such as "A Recent Confession of an Opium-eater." Two longer pieces as well--"A Policer-Officer's Seven Thousand Miles' Stretch" by J.B. Armstrong and the first installment of "The Refugees: An Indian Tale of 1812" by Emerson Bennett--one real life adventure and the first fictional installment of a series, the types of features that helped this weekly soon achieve prominence.. First Edition. Disbound. Very Good.
