Quarto (12 x 9 inches / 350 x 228 mm), single sheet folded to create four pages. Printed on newsprint.
Yonkers, New York: Self-published, 1946. First Edition.
An appeal by former Communist Party USA General Secretary Earl Browder to the party membership, dated just days after his expulsion from the party. Printed at his own expense (there's even a coupon for sending in a donation),
Browder argues that he has faithfully followed the party line and denies he has engaged in factionalism or attempting to undermine the party's current leadership. He further states that he was given no opportunity to defend himself during a "trial" by the party's national board.
As far as Communists go, Browder (1891-1973) was actually fairly moderate compared with his left-wing nemesis, William Z. Foster. Among other things, Browder advocated cooperation with the Roosevelt and Truman administrations as well as with other progressive groups. But following the end of World War II, the Communist Party, following the Soviet line, adopted a much more confrontational policy toward the U.S. government and became even more radical and insular. Browder found himself odd man out.
OCLC lists only four institutional holdings: Yale, Williams, Hamilton, and Syracuse. No other copies in commerce. SCARCE.
CONDITION: Some darkening to paper, a few small nicks to the margins, old folds. A Very Good copy.

Ickes, Harold. Columnists and Calumnists. No place of publication stated: No publisher stated, 1939. 8 1/2 x 11 (216 x 280 mm) sheets, [1], 16 pages, printed on rectos only and stapled at top left. Advance copy of an acerbic speech by U.S. Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes, in which he levels sustained, withering criticism of certain newspaper columnists (or "calumnists," as he calls them). He singles out Westbrook Pegler as well as General Hugh Johnson, both fierce opponents of President Roosevelt. (Johnson worked briefly in the Roosevelt administration but was fired because of his Fascist sympathies.) On the other hand, he praises the great Heywood Broun: "Here is a genial philosopher who declines to take himself too seriously and yet one who never pulls his punches, even if he chuckles as he lands on an eagerly outstretched chin."
His view of Dorothy Thompson is decidedly mixed. On the one hand, he calls her "a sincere and earnest lady who is trying to cover too much ground by setting… Read More

New York: Marston Remedy Company, 1905. Revised Edition. 16mo (6 3/8 x 4 1/2 inches; 162 x 113 mm), 32 pages, in stapled wrappers (soft cover). Pamphlet from a company offering "medicated" suppositories and contraptions that purportedly treat men's sexual, nervous, and urinary disorders. One "treatment" involves cocoa butter. "The suppository now glides into the rectum with the most perfect ease by means of a little pressure from the finger, and, which is often important, this method of rectal treatment leaves no traces to excite the curiosity of servants or others." (page 10). While most of the "treatments" involve suppositories of one kind or another, the company also offers devices to relieve men's suffering (illustrations helpfully included). There's "Dr. Curling's Varicocele Truss," which supposedly treats pain in the scrotum. This, we're told, is preferable to surgery. "Several surgeons have been assassinated by patients whom they have thus made hoplessly (sic) impotent." (page 23). There's…

Description:
Redlands, California: Pure Gold, [1955]. Stapled wraps. Very good. [12p.] Small chips to wrap edges. The Mutual Orange Distributors (MOD) was founded in Redlands, California, in 1906 as a cooperative marketing association representing citrus growers in California. Within a few years, the coop included citrus growers in western Arizona. In 1955, MOD changed its name to Pure Gold, originally the brand name for fruit grown by the approximately 2,500 MOD growers. Sunkist took over the Pure Gold trademark when the co-op closed in 1987 due to housing developments replacing the citrus fields and the shrinking number of packing plants. This booklet explains the history of the citrus-growing culture in California and Arizona and provides information on the variety of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit grown and their cultivation and packaging. A map on the back shows the regions represented by the Pure Gold cooperative. Scarce, none located in OCLC. B&w illustrations and halftone photographs. (11"x8-1/2")
