About This Item

New York: Sheldon & Co, 1864. First printing. Pamphlet. Good + overall. The program for the dedication of the site for the Battle Monument at West Point, with the oration of Maj.-Gen. McClellan. The imposing Tuscan column designed by Stanford White is located at Trophy Point at the United States Military Academy and was dedicated in 1897 by surviving Civil War veterans. Built of polished granite it is 46 feet tall and surmounted by a statue of Fame sculpted by Frederick MacMonnies. Colonel Hasbrouck (Class of May 1861), suggested the idea of including the names of all officers and men of the Regular Army killed in action; a monument to the "regulars" had not previously been erected.

Pamphlet includes the history of the project, programme of ceremonies, prayers, and oration by McClellan. McClellan wrote, in part, "We have met and assembled to consecrate a cenotaph, which shall remind children's children in the distant future of their fathers' struggle in the days of the great rebellion." (p17).

12mo, 35, [4] pp. Blue printed paper wrappers, little chipped at top edge with corner missing, but with clean text, a good + copy overall. Sabin 43015. OCLC: 793449259 records one copy (bound with 2 other titles).
