Establishment of Indian Tribes. Letter from the Secretary of the Interior Transmitting Letter from the Associated Executive Committee of Friends on Indian Affairs, Relative to the Location and Establishment of the Kiowas, Comanches, and Apache Indians

It is our desire to promote the settlement of these Indians upon farms, and secure their support from the labor of their own hands," wrote the members of the Associated Executive Committee of Friends on Indian Affairs. The group had been formed under President Ulysses S. Grant, who in an attempt to secure peace on the Plains authorized a group of Quakers to oversee Native American affairs in Kansas and the Indian Territory.

This publication prints the Quakers' request for funds to help settle 10,000 members of the Kiowa, Comanche, Apache, Arapahoe, Cheyenne, Sac, and Fox tribes in Indian territory and to begin the process of teaching them to farm. The logic behind the request was the considerable sum, estimated here at $200,000 per year, required just to ship food from the nearest rail line to the Native American settlements in the Indian Territory. Farming was the only alternative, the Committee of Friends said, "unless we are prepared to permit their return to nomadic habits."
