Ditterline, Theodore.

SKETCH OF THE BATTLES OF GETTYSBURG, JULY 1ST, 2D, AND 3D, 1863: WITH AN ACCOUNT OF THE MOVEMENTS OF THE RESPECTIVE ARMIES FOR SOME DAYS PREVIOUS THERETO. COMPILED FROM THE PERSONAL OBSERVATION OF EYE-WITNESSES OF THE SEVERAL BATTLES. ACCOMPANIED BY AN EXPLANATORY MAP.

NY: Alvord, 1863. Pp. [4] [5-]6-24, color lithographed map. Map sheet measures 22.75" x 16.5", titled Field of Gettysburg July 1st. 2nd. & 3rd. 1863. Prepared by T. Ditterline. Drawn by T. Ditterline, Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1863 by T. Ditterline in the Clerk's Office of the Dist. Court of the East Dist. of Pa. P.S. Duval & Son Lith. Philda. Scale.

Original black wraps professionally restored, but with light spotting, text has some stains, general wear, and some chips and rough edges. Map pasted at one corner to first leaf of pamphlet printing text of a letter dated 23 October 1863 attesting to the accuracy of the map.

Map has professional reinforcing on folds but is bright and very good. The text of the pamphlet condenses personal observations from several witnesses to the battle, giving troop positions and movements over the course of the three days, as well as prominent engagements, and characters of the various officers in command. The first edition with the first issue of the map; the map was later redrawn, almost identically, by Julius Bien of New York. Other than newspaper accounts, this is the first printed account of the battle. The distinctive oval map illustrates the primary features of the course of the battle over several days, indicating strategies, victories, losses, and locations around Gettysburg including residences. The Library of Congress website features this map in several places, e.g., With Malice Toward None - the Lincoln bicentennial exhibit in 2009, American Treasures, and Civil War Maps.

Description:
1664 1st ed NEW YORK George Downing Discourse on DUTCH Settlements Indians 2v
Two exceedingly rare first editions of George Downing's defense of New York!
George Downing was an Irish preacher and political apologist known for his service under Oliver Cromwell in Scotland. In 1664 he wrote a short political letter describing the details of his arrangement of the acquisition of New York from the Dutch. 'A Discourse', as it is called, was written to clear his own name from any misconduct in the exchange. One of the most notable discussions in this work is a report on the miserable interactions of the Dutch settlers with local Indian tribes, as well as business and trade in New York. It should be noted that this work is considered one of the earliest works relating to New York in English! (Stevens).
A year after his first letter was written, he wrote his own reply – a work, which according to 'Rare Americana', was
"privately printed, and relates principally to the affairs of the English and Dutch West… Read More

London: Printed for J. Dodsley, in Pall-Mall, 1790. First edition. Octavo. Period-style half calf and marbled boards, red morocco spine label. Offsetting to endpapers from leather tips, title page browned and spotting to certain leaves. Todd identifies three editions with a 1790 title page, comprising ten impressions. Todd's setting a of [A]2 with the ornamental flower on p. [iv] pointing to the right and the "M" in the imprint immediately below the first "D" of "Dodsley" and setting x of 2A2 with no press figure on p. 354. SC/2/6.. First edition of Edmund Burke's (1729-1797) enduring polemic against the French Revolution and defense of conservative principles. The publication of Burke's pamphlet in 1790 would prove a watershed moment in the birth and development of modern conservatism, as Reflections has been credited as among the first-and finest-transformative statements of traditionalism into a fully conceived political philosophy. Burke was an Irish statesman who served in the House of Commons… Read More

A very rare signed edition of privately printed 100 copies of Captain Francis W Dawson's memoir by The News and Courier Book Press. Blue-gray cloth binding decorated with red stamped C.S.A and embellishments. 240 x 150 mm. (9 3/8 x 5 7/8"). 180 pp.
Author signed: "Mr. W.L. Daggett, from F.W. Dawson, Jan 1883". The author inscribed this book to William L. Daggett (1824-1889), a printer working for the Charleston's News and Courier with Dawson. Presumably Mr. Daggett was responsible for printing this book, making this a presentation copy.
This very rare book is a remarkable account of an Englishman traveling to the American South to join the Southern Confederacy. His book includes 18 wartime letters to his friends and family in England.
Note: A few pages (pp 9-16) inside are loosening from spine (not completely detached, there is also no loss to text or tear), hence we have adequately reduced the price. Overall this book is in great condition and would be a beautiful addition to the library of someone… Read More

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
