Compehensive and detailed description of a world tour by Friedrich Zahn-Geigy (1848-1929), a 23-year-old descendant of a Swiss banker's family from Basle. The journey, not only undertaken for educational purposes solely, but as is related in the text also for business reasons, visiting long-standing business partners and looking out for new fields of business especially in the US and South East Asia, first led them to the United States of America and Canada, then Japan and China to India, and back to Basle via Egypt, Turkey and Austria. After his return, he became an influential banker in Basle and in the course of his career, a member of the Board of the Swiss Bankers Association.
The present typescript, together with the illustrations were made by the author starting with volume I from 1907 onwards and then more intensively from 1917-1923. The text is based on the travelogues and letters, the photographs, both his own and purchased ones (in volume I he mentions more than 500 large-format photographs), of which he made scaled down prints, and last but not least, he himself copied his pencil drawings made on the spot during the travels.
- Volume I contains his records of of trvels in the USA and Canada (Niagara Falls, Quebec and Montreal), his three-month stay in New York and travels to Florida, Cuba, New Orleans, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Chicago, Salt Lake City and a longer stay in San Francisco and the surrounding area in order to investigate the possibility of investments in gold mines. Illustrated with 60 photographs and 96 original pen- and ink drawings.
- Volume II with his travels in Japan, which only in 1864 signed a trade agreement with the Swiss government. He travelled widely and stayed in Yokohama, Tokyo, Osaka and Nagasaki. Illustrated with 54 photographs and 40 original pen- and ink drawings.
- Volume III contains his notes on China, Vietnam and Cambodia, Singapure, Java and Penang with descriptions of Shanghai, Canton, Hong Kong, Macao, Saigon, Singapore and Jakarta. Illustrated with 59 photographs and 56 original pen- and ink drawings.
- Volume IV with a description of his travels in Sri Lanka and India.Illustrated with 76 photographs and 44 original pen- and ink drawings.
- Volume V contains notes on his home-coming via Suez, and Cairo, Alexandria, Smyrna, Constantinople, Pest, Vienna back to Basle. Illustrated with 34 photographs and 52 original pen- and ink drawings.
Volume I with an appendix including 48 photographs of Chinese and Japanese art and artifacts, which he and his fellow passengers bought during their travels and partially donated to the ethnographical department of the Natural History Museum in Basle. Particularly noteworthy is the large number of photographs either taken by the travellers themselves or purchased from local photographs, a total of 281, which were used in scaled down prints; some of the visited areas and people photographed are quite early photographic representations including Singapore, Saigon, Angkor Wat; a portrait of the King of Cambodia, his daughter, several princes and the queen; a portrait of members of the Javanese rulers' house, including the emperor and the empress, prince and princess.
Overall excellent condition, a fine copy of a remarkably illustrated and comprehensive travelogue.

Description:
Routledge, 1990. 8vo size trade paperback; 390 pages including index From back: "This is a unique study, continuing the work of Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger, and using the techniques of phenomenology against the prevailing nihilism of our culture. It expands our understanding of the human potential for spiritual self-realization by interpreting it as the developing of a bodily-felt awareness informing our gestures and movements. The author argues that a psychological focus on our experiences of well-being and pathology as embodied beings contribute significantly to a historically relevant critique of idealogy. It also provides an essential touchstone in experience for a fruitful individual and collective response to the dangers of nihilism." Edgewear, moderate wear to covers with sunned spine; marginalia, underlining and very light highlighting on least 58 pages prior to page 107; two previously folded page corners, some stray ink marks on outside pages.
