Handwritten letter to "Jack": [J. B. S. Haldane]

by Huxley, Julian

  • Used
Handwritten signed letter from Julian Huxley to "Jack" [J. B. S. Haldane] dated November 10 '52. Notepaper with printed heading 31 Pond Street, Hampstead. 17cm x 20cm. 2pp. Congratulating Haldane on receiving the Darwin Medal from the Royal Society. Lengthy additional discussion about the delayed publication and editorial requirements of 'Evolution as a Process', with suggestions for additions to Haldane's contribution to the work, which was published in 1954. Edited by Huxley, together with A. C Hardy and H. B. Ford, both of whom are mentioned in the letter, Haldane's contributory essay being 'Statics of evolution'. Huxley and Haldane were close friends and undoubtedly the best known British biologists of the early twentieth century. A previously unrecorded letter.

Sir Julian Huxley FRS (1887 - 1975) British evolutionary biologist, philosopher.

John Burdon Sanderson Haldane FRS (1892 - 1964) Julian Huxley's brother Aldous Huxley described him as "the biologist too absorbed in his experiments to notice his friends bedding his wife".

Description:
LONDON : John Van Voorst, 1856 A VG copy of the first edition in the original blind stamped decorative cloth binding with gilt titles to spine. With colour printed fold out frontispiece, 5 further colour plates and one plain plate as called for. The Revd Tugwell unashamedly addressed this work to 'the amateur rambler about our English coasts' and provides an account in plain language for the rambler to follow. The result is a charming example of victorian natural history - written to encourage the reader to understand nature better. With a listing of locations at the rear. The binding and the original endpapers are in very good clean condition with only a very slight marking to the top of the boards. The contents are also very clean and bright. The reverse of the plates have shadows of the plate images but there is little offsetting to the text. Small light book, please enquire if you would like us to assess postage at cost.
