An armorial binding for Anton Ignatz von Fugger-Glött
Horatii Tursellini (Torsellini), De Vita S. Francisci Xaverii Libri Sex, Quam Emendatissime Editi. Augustae Vind. & Oeniponti, Sumptibus JOSEPHI WOLFF. MDCCLII. Approx. 6 1/2", 17 cm.
Full brown leather, fully gold tooled around the gold blocked Fugger armorial, the rear board offering two additional tools used to cover the armorial area of the binding. All edges are gilt and the light blue headbands are in very good condition.
The marbled paper lining was covered with a contemporary white paper upon which the previous owner wrote or had written: "Zum Seminar S. EmmeramNum. 4.Theol.",or "To the Seminary S.(Saint) Emmeram....", the number 4 mentioned in the inscription is repeated on the yellow label affixed to the spine.
Anton Ignatz von Fugger-Glött (1711-1787), for whom this binding was created, was prince-provost of Ellwangen and prince-bishop of Regensburg. It seems that he gave this book to the S. Emmeram Seminary, explaining the ink annotation.

Description:
Lutetiae Prisorum: Sumptibus Frobrt Fouet, Via Iacobaea Sub Insigni Temporis & Occasionis, 1624. Folio. Charles Dumoulin (or Dumolin, Latinized Molinaeus) was noted for his works on jurisprudence and all aspects of Roman law as well as canon and customary law claiming that he was the chief expert on law over anyone in France or Germany. His learnedness was mixed with a desire to upset the system; consequently, he became a Protestant and attacked the Council of Trent which led to his imprisonment in Paris. The Printer's device sweeping through history is accompanied with the Latin phrase HANC ACIEM SOLA RETUNDIT VIRTUS or in one translation "Virtue alone withstands this blade". Volume I lacks the original title page, volume two with title page present. Bound in 1/4 calf over paper covered boards, red leather labels gilt, spine ends chipped, text without foxing.

Description:
A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). Each work has a separate title page or a large heading, and retains the dedications etc written when they were first published. The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147. The fourth is Job Militant with half title page, proposition, dedication and text running to p 231. The fifth is the History of Sampson with no title page but starting with 'To the Reader' and text to p 232. The sixth is Sion's Sonnets…
