Miller, Arthur

New York: The Viking Press, 1949. First edition. Fine/Fine. Signed by the author on the first blank. Book Fine with a short price code stamped on the final blank, otherwise untouched. In a Fine dust jacket with bright, vibrant colors, including the spine fonts and only the most niggling wear at the crown. A book that is becoming extremely difficult to locate in Fine condition. Arthur Miller's 1949 play - one of the towering classics of the American stage. "Death of a Salesman" follows the trials of Willy Loman, the quintessential American tragic hero. The original production was directed by Elia Kazan, starred Lee J. Cobb, and ran for 742 performances. The role of Loman has also been played by such luminaries as George C. Scott, Brian Dennehy, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. The play would win a Tony Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and the New York Drama Circle Critics' Award, becoming the first play to win all three prizes. It would also be adapted into a 1951 film, directed by Stanley Roberts -- Fredric March would be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. "Arthur Miller has written a superb drama. From every point of view "Death of a Salesman," which was acted at the Morosco last evening, is a rich and memorable drama. It is so simple in style and so inevitable in theme that it scarcely seems like a thing that has been written and acted." (Brooks Atkinson in a Contemporary New York Times review). Fine in Fine dust jacket.

Death of a Salesman

Miller, Arthur

Very Good book with soft spine ends, sun fade along edges of orange boards and spine, top stain faded, wear and rubbing along bottom edges that has just exposed a bit of board at corners. Stray, very small spot to second end page and with several small indentations near top corner title page, and next 3 pages. There is a broken "o" in "solid" on p.11 line 7. Second state jacket (with mention of Drama Critic's award to front flap and no photo of Miller on back flap) is Very Good with edge and corner wear, some light color loss and small chips at spine ends. Price on front flap is $2.50. Jacket has slight soiling back panel, mild rubbing, small closed tear at top front at spine, touch of sun fade. This is Miller's Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play of 1949. Many available signed copies have Miller's signature to a tipped-in end page; however, this copy has been signed by the author on the half-title page. Additionally, there are two pages laid-in documenting the provenance of Miller's signature. The first is a copy of a letter of June 20, 2003, to the then owner of the book on Miller's letterhead. The letter notes that Mr. Miller is happy to sign books, but in the future please include post-paid packaging for the return shipment. The letter is signed by Julia Bolus, assistant to A. M. Also laid-in is a copy of the front of envelope that contained the letter, showing a June postmark and Miller's return address.

Death of a Salesman: Certain Private Conversations in Two Acts and a Requiem

Miller, Arthur

New York: The Viking Press, 1949 First edition, first issue. Publisher's orange cloth, with an illustration of the play's stage setting and the spine lettering in brown, pictorial endpapers illustrated with a reproduced drawing of the play's stage setting by the play's original set designer Jo Mielziner; original first issue dust jacket with illustration of the protagonist Willy Loman designed by Joseph Hirsch. A near fine or better copy, with a hint of wear to the extremities, extremely faint toning to the spine, bright and fresh interior; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, minor chipping to the spine ends, a few light smudges to the rear panel, otherwise clean and bright panels. Overall, an attractive, tight copy. Death of a Salesman is Miller's best known play, about Willy Loman, an aging traveling salesman who struggles financially and emotionally after losing his job. The plot was largely influenced by Miller's own experience as part of a prosperous immigrant family who achieved the American Dream only to be later devastated by the Great Depression. The story is told in stream-of-consciousness style, with Loman drifting between the reality of his shabby apartment and the idyllic memories of a more prosperous yesteryear. This literary technique is achieved in the theater setting through Loman's conversation with characters who exist only his imagination, as indicated by the play's half-title. Death of a Salesman debuted on Broadway at the Morosco Theatre in New York on February 10, 1949, starring Lee J. Cobb as Willy Loman and under the direction of Elia Kazan. A literary and theatrical success, Death of a Salesman won both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play in 1949.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Death of a Salesman; Certain private conversations in two acts and a requiem

Miller, Arthur

new York: The Viking Press, 1949. First edition. Mild dampstain affecting lower edge, especially on rear, slight shelf wear, still an unusually nice copy in an unfaded dust jacket with a pair of small closed tears to the front, loght rubbing to the extremities, and evidence of the aforementioned dampstain to the lower rear panel. A much nicer copy than it sounds.. 8vo, 139pp; orange cloth. The first printing, with the printer identified and "March 1949" on the copyright page; dust jacket with price of $2.50 on the front flap and photo of Miller on the rear flap. While not a rare book -- there are at any given given moment several dozen copies available, it is a difficult book to find in top condition. This does not quite fit that particular bill, but despite its stated flaws, it is a handsome copy and a good value.
