Casino Royale

By Fleming, Ian

Ian Fleming (1908-1964), creator of the world's best-known secret agent, is the author of fourteen James Bond books. Born in London in 1908 and educated at Eton and Sandhurst, he became the Reuters Moscow correspondent in 1929. In the spring of 1939, Fleming went back to Moscow as a special correspondent for the London Times. In June of that same year, he joined Naval Intelligence and served throughout World War II, finally earning the rank of Commander, RNVSR (Sp.). Much of the James Bond material was drawn directly from Fleming's experiences as an intelligence officer. Later, Fleming became a consultant on foreign affairs for the London Sunday Times, by which time he had become far better known as the creator of James Bond.

Fleming, Ian

London: Jonathan Cape, 1953. First edition of the first novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. Octavo, original black cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Ralph, We have now both reduced our remainders by one copy! Ian." With a note of explanation by the recipient underneath, "I having told Ian, from the depths of my publishing experience, that he would be lucky if he made GBP200 out of this, his first thriller!! R.A." The recipient Ralph Arnold was a novelist, historical writer and publisher who joined Constable in 1936 and was chairman from 1958 to 1962. Arnold and Fleming studied together at the Tennerhof School in Kitzbuhel, Austria, and it was there that both made their first forays into story-writing. Having left Sandhurst without obtaining a commission, Fleming "was sent to 'sort himself out' at a quasi-finishing school for men in Kitzbuhel ... There, while skiing and climbing mountains, he came under the benevolent tutelage of Ernan Forbes Dennis, a former British spy turned educationalist, and his wife, Phyllis Bottome, an established novelist. Forbes Dennis brought out Fleming's aptitude for languages and introduced him to literature, while his wife encouraged him to write his first stories." (Oxford DNB). Near fine in a near fine first state dust jacket (without the Sunday Times review on the inner front flap) with the lightest of rubbing to the extremities. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Casino Royale was written by Ian Fleming in Jamaica over a period of around two months, largely from his own experiences and imagination; he also devised the artwork for the cover. "Within the first few pages Fleming had introduced most of Bond's idiosyncrasies and trademarks," which included his looks, his Bentley and his smoking and drinking habits. The full details of Bond's martini were kept until chapter seven of the book and Bond eventually named it "The Vesper", after Vesper Lynd" (Andrew Lycett). It has been filmed twice as a feature film, the first being the 1967 spoof starring David Niven, and later as the twenty-first official Bond film starring Daniel Craig as James Bond.

Fleming, Ian

London: Jonathan Cape, 1953. First edition. 218 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Publisher's black cloth, stamped in red. Slight lean, a few trifling stains on covers, in first state dust-jacket without Sunday Times Review on front flap (light creasing to spine ends and some toning to rear panel). In a custom red half morocco clamshell box. First edition. 218 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. INSCRIBED TO HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW. Presentation copy of the first edition of the first James Bond novel, inscribed on the flyeaf by Fleming to his brother-in-law Hugo Charteris, "To Hugo, This sitting bird, from, the author." Charteris (1922-1970), a novelist and screenwriter, was the brother of Fleming's wife Ann. He disliked Fleming, identifying his "crude mixture of nihilism and opportunism" (Lycett, Ian Fleming, p. 205), though he supported Fleming and Ann's decision to marry. His reaction to Fleming's first novel was decidely negative, and perhaps motivated by professional jealousy. From a letter by Charteris to his sister Mary Rose: "Ian's thriller starts well ... but ends as the most disgusting thing I've ever seen in print - torture such as Japs and Huns eschewed as not cricket, I always knew he was neurotic and tangled. But it's been reprinted already - which won't happen to my book" (quoted in Lycett, p. 244). Gilbert A1a (1.1)

FLEMING, Ian.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1953. In the exceptionally bright dust jacket Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine red, heart device to front cover in red, bottom edge untrimmed. With the illustrated dust jacket. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Boards very slightly bowed, a little foxing to top edge, a couple of faint spots of foxing to rear endpaper, otherwise internally fresh, in the exceptionally bright jacket with trivial nicks to head of spine panel and tiny puncture to head of front panel. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression, first state dust jacket (without the Sunday Times review on the inner front flap). "According to the Cape archives, 4,760 sets of sheets of the first printing were delivered, but only 4,728 copies were bound up. Many of these went to public libraries and we believe that less than half of the first printing was sold to the public. The jacket is genuinely rare in fresh condition" (Biondi & Pickard, 40). FLEMING, Ian (1908-1964)

London: Jonathan Cape, 1953. [Spy thriller] FIRST EDITION, Second Impression, Jacket 'A' (the first edition d/w, over-printed with the Sunday Times review). Octavo (20 x 13cm), pp.218; [2], blank. Publisher's black cloth-effect paper over boards, decorated with heart motif to upper, lettered in red to spine. Pictorial dust-wrapper priced at 10/6. Some edgespotting, jacket with some chips and tears; very good. A CURIOUS ASSOCIATION COPY, from the library of the original super-yacht Calisto, R.Y.S., owned by Thomas Loel Guinness, OBE (1906-1988). A member of the wealthy brewing dynasty, Group Capt. Guinness was a business magnate, Conservative MP and decorated Battle of Britain fighter pilot. Guinness also owned the sister ship Calypso. Whilst Calisto was used as the Guinness luxury yacht, the Calypso was fitted as a marine research vessel, becoming synonymous with the famous oceanic explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau and featuring in his movie 'The Silent World' (1956). Author Ian Fleming was a close friend of Cousteau, spent time aboard the Calypso and dived with him while researching his second James Bond novel Live and Let Die. Cousteau and the Calypso are eulogised by Fleming in his travel book Thrilling Cities (1963). The Calisto/Calypso yachts seemingly inspired Emile Largo's craft Disco Volante in Thunderball. Fleming, Ian

New York: Macmillan, 1954. First American edition. Fine/Near Fine. A sharp, Fine copy of the book with the title page over-opened, otherwise in excellent condition. Clean and unmarked. In a Near Fine dust jacket that is lightly rubbed on the rear panel, with the spine gently faded and the spine ends with minor wear. The extremely rare, first state of the dust jacket with no corners clipped. [Gilbert A1b (1.1)] It seems to be 20 times as rare as the second state dust jacket, maybe 100 times. With copies of the British first fetching record prices, this is an attractive alternative for the discriminating Bond collector. Fleming's first James Bond novel - where the world renowned series began. Published in 1953, Casino Royale follows Bond as he attempts, over a game of cards, to ruin evil banker and KGB member Le Chiffre. The book also introduces the characters of Vesper Lynd and Felix Leiter. Fleming wrote the book at a furious pace - it took two months - from his estate in Jamaica. The idea from the novel came from Fleming's own experience serving in the Naval Intelligence Division of the Admiralty during World War II. He went on a trip to Portugal which, because of its neutrality, was home to spies from both Axis and Allied powers and it's thought Fleming lost a great deal of money playing cards against a high level German spy. The book inspired a 1967 comedy, starring David Niven, Woody Allan, and Orson Welles as well as a more faithful 2006 adaptation with Daniel Craig, Eva Green, and Mads Mikkelsen. In a contemporary review in The Daily Telegraph, John Betjeman wrote: "Ian Fleming has discovered the secret of the narrative art ...". Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

Casino Royale Bentley Limited Edition.

Fleming, Ian; Introduction by Stirling Moss

London: Vintage Books/ Random House, 2013. Bentley Motors Special Series limited edition Ian Fleming's first book, which introduced the world to James Bond. Quarto, one of only 500 examples produced and bound in full beluga-colored leather sourced from the tannery in Italy which provides hides for Bentley's interiors, all edges silver, ribbon bound in, illustrated. Using Bentley's craftsmanship, this edition features the iconic double stitching and signature winged Bentley logo - all hand stitched on the leather casing. Bentley's trademark knurling adorns the metal spine which was inspired by the Bentley steel tread plate. Signed by Stirling Moss on the title page, who contributed the foreword to this volume. Illustrations by the award-winning illustrator Damian Gascoigne. In fine condition. "Bond's car was his only personal hobby. One of the last of the 4 1/2 litre Bentleys with the supercharger by Amherst Villiers, he had bought it almost new in 1933 and had kept it in careful storage throughout the war... Bond drove it hard and well and with an almost sensual pleasure" (Ian Fleming, Casino Royale). Housed in the original clamshell box, with the original leather case holding two bespoke Bentley playing cards. Desirable signed by Stirling Moss.

Casino Royale: James Bond 007: MINT UNOPENED 'BENTLEY' LIMITED EDITION

Ian Fleming

'Surround yourself with human beings, my dear James. They are easier to fight for than principles' In Casino Royale, the first of Fleming's 007 adventures, a game of cards is James Bond's only chance to bring down the desperate SMERSH agent Le Chiffre. But Bond soon discovers that there is far more at stake than money. From the hand-bound beluga leather casing to distinctive Bentley features such as hand-stitched embroidery and silver foil page edges, this special edition of Casino Royale is produced with only the very finest materials. Its striking red, white and black colouring is a nod to the gambling theme of Fleming's first novel, where Bond famously takes on his adversary, Le Chiffre, over a game of baccarat. A special feature of this edition is the bespoke set of playing cards, hidden within a secret compartment. The book is presented in an elegant leather clamshell case, with both case and special edition book are bound in beluga coloured leather, sourced from the tannery in Italy which provides hides for Bentley's interiors. Using Bentley's craftsmanship, this edition features the iconic double stitching and signature winged Bentley logo – all hand stitched on the leather casing. Bentley's trademark knurling adorns the metal spine. This feature is inspired by the Bentley steel tread plate. Each book has a limitation marque with Ian Fleming's signature, reflecting the plate you would find on a Bentley engine. Throughout each book are evocative brush illustrations by the Award winning illustrator Damian Gascoigne. About the Author: Ian Lancaster Fleming was born in London in 1908. His first job was at Reuters news agency after which he worked briefly as a stockbroker before working in Naval Intelligence during the Second World War. His first novel, Casino Royale, was published in 1953 and was an instant success. Fleming went on to write thirteen other Bond books as well as two works of non-fiction and the children's classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The Bond books have sold over sixty million copies and earned praise from figures such as Raymond Chandler who called Fleming 'the most forceful and driving writer of thrillers in England' and President Kennedy who named From Russia with Love as one of his favourite books. The books inspired a hugely successful series of film adaptations which began in 1962 with the release of Dr No, starring Sean Connery as 007. Fleming was married to Anne Rothermere with whom he had a son, Caspar. He died in 1964.

Casino Royale

Fleming, Ian

Synopsis: Casino Royale is the first novel by the British author Ian Fleming. Published in 1953, it is the first James Bond book, and it paved the way for a further eleven novels and two short story collections by Fleming, followed by numerous continuation Bond novels by other authors. The story concerns the British secret agent James Bond, gambling at the casino in Royale-les-Eaux to bankrupt Le Chiffre, the treasurer of a French union and a member of the Russian secret service. Bond is supported in his endeavours by Vesper Lynd, a member of his own service, as well as Felix Leiter of the CIA and René Mathis of the French Deuxième Bureau. Fleming used his wartime experiences as a member of the Naval Intelligence Division, and the people he met during his work, to provide plot elements; the character of Bond also reflected many of Fleming's personal tastes. Fleming wrote the draft in early 1952 at his Goldeneye estate in Jamaica while awaiting his marriage. He was initially unsure whether the work was suitable for publication, but was assured by his friend, the novelist William Plomer, that the novel had promise. Within the spy storyline, Casino Royale deals with themes of Britain's position in the world, particularly the relationship with the US in light of the defections to the Soviet Union of the British traitors Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean. The book was given broadly positive reviews by critics at the time and sold out in less than a month after its UK release on 13 April 1953, although US sales upon release a year later were much slower.
