The jacket has a 1" tear (no loss) to the rear panel; price-clipped. Much larger than the format we usually see, this first edition is a pleasure & delight. I can't imagine how the Provensens never won the Caldecott, their illustrations have been beloved for decades! This book in particular is one of their best to read with kids. Lots of stuff to learn and to look at!

Brown cloth boards, both covers ruled in black borders, front board with gilt device, spine lettering and decoration in gilt, brown clay-coated endpapers, 7-7/8" tall, 346 pp. including 72 figures, plus 3 pages of ads for tools. Light wear to edges of boards, spine is not hollow-backed indicating previous repair, some loss of color to bottom corner of front board, contempo-rary bookplate to front endpaper, pull and hole to front end-paper probably from sloppy pasting of bookplate. This is a wonderful, if late, transitional piece between the simple book stamps of the mid-nineteenth century, and the elaborate designs of the 1880s-1890s. The central image is still a traditional and somewhat stiff but descriptive vignette. However, unlike most stamps of the 1840s-1860s, this image is surrounded by a decorative frame, into which the title of the book is included. Toning to edges of wraps, crayon numbers (I believe numerology-related) on title page, a few stray pencil markings in margins. Certainly, a solid, usable copy of an uncommon book. Michael X was an early advocate of combining UFOs and New Age thought.
