Poet and painter Lloyd Mifflin (1846-1921) was born in Columbia, Pennsylvania. Encouraged his landowning father, Mifflin received art instruction first from his father and then at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He then studied in Germany becoming a good painter, as well as a good photographer later in life. Believing that paint fumes were damaging his health, Mifflin stopped painting to concentrate on writing poetry, specifically sonnets.
