York: John Hildyard; Thomas Gent, 1753. Vigorously executed second edition 'with the Addition of Fifteen New Anthems' bound in contemporary sheepskin and Yorkshire provenance. Full sheep binding with blind double fillet framing the boards. Ownership signature of 'Ann Gelson' to the first flyleaf (noted in the parish registers of Holy Trinity Church, Goodramgate, York, died 1786). Frontispiece by John Haynes depicting York, Durham and Lincoln cathedrals where these anthems were performed. Woodcuts interspersed through the text. Viny:l near fine, dusty with a couple of scratches. Sleeve: very good, rubbed to edges and lightly marked. Provenance: from the sale by Frieda Hughes, daughter of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes of 'my personal family items' at Bonhams, London (21 March, 2018) which she described in the catalogue as 'redolent of my parents' joint history... the books and the pamphlets and the poems signed by my mother and father, represented important aspects of their literary lives and were evidence of their powerful partnership.' Near Fine. pp 8 A near fine copy of an illustrated booklet produced to publicise the York Minster Fund to save the cathedral from imminent collapse in 1967. Complete with two blank banker's orders, an invitation to Mr and Mrs W J Charlton of Ackworth Park, Pontefract, to attend the public launching of the appeal, and a typescript agenda of that meeting. As New. pp 224 Illustrated biographies and career statistics of the 95 Yorkshire-born cricketers who have represented their country at Test Match level. Several, including Jim Laker and Derek Shakleton, slipped the Yorkshire net and played for other counties and even countries other than England. The book is as new, the dust jacket fine, residue from a sticky label to the lower cover. A fascinating compilation in pristine condition. As New 2009

Sheffield: Walker and Carson Ltd, 1939. 220 x 143 mm. Good. pp 1-252 The handbook of the Yorkshire Tennis Association. A hugely detailed yearbook devoted to people and events in Yorkshire Tennis presided over by the association's President Colonel H O Wade. The book contains lists of tournaments, pictures of junior players and match reports for men's and women's games. There is a profile of Liversedge club with a picture of members, another article about the Davis Cup and long lists of match results. Altogether a fascinating book, bound in the original printed cream card wrappers with the white rose in green now pretty much invisible because of extensive marking and discolouration to the card, including an unsightly cup mark. Internally the text is complete but again discoloured with some old damp staining through the top of some pages. Good 1939

Near Fine. pp116 A facsimile reproduction of the 1916 edition published in York, written by Oxley Grabham, Keeper of the York Museum, with a new introduction by Peter Walton. Near fine in red cloth, a little spotting to the top edge and end papers. In a very good dust wrapper, rubbed to edges and lower panel, spine faded. Leeds: Yorkshire Chronicle, 1992. Near Fine. large folio. Twelve issues of the The Yorkshire Chronicle bound in one volume. Issues 1-12, November 1992- October 1993 of a local newspaper which offered "a nostaligic look at Yorkshire's Yesteryears". They come from the collection of Yorkshire bookbinder and bibliophile Martin E Thorpe who has rebound them in quarter leather with gilt spine lettering over red boards. Near fine, the boards are very lightly soiled, the newspapers are crisp, fresh and unmarked. Additional shipping charges may apply as this is a large and heavy volume. Near Fine 1992

In a very good dust wrapper, not price clipped, minor rubbing to the edges and foxing to lower panel. Overall a very smart copy of this lesser known title. Very Good 1955

London: Unpublished Letter, 1760. No Binding. Very Good. Letter salutation written at Northumberland House, the London residence of the Percy family, from Elizabeth Percy, wife of Sir Hugh Smithson who became Duchess of Northumberland in 1766. The letter fragment is tipped onto part of an album page and gives the date followed by Elizabeth Percy's salutation and signature. An attractive item relating to one of the great families of northern England. Very Good 1760

Stirling: Scots Independent (Newpapers) Ltd, 2011. pp 155 The personal recollections of Scottish author, historian and politician James Halliday who was chairman of the Scottish National Party from 1956-1960. Fine paperback, signed by the author to the title page. Provenance: from the recent Glasgow dispersal sale of Alasdair Gray's library. Gray (1934-2019) is acknowledged as one of the most innovative figures in Scottish literature and culture. Painter, novelist, playwright, poet and editor, Gray frequently combined his diverse artistic talents within single works to challenge existing forms. He has been described as 'Blending satire and tragedy, realism and fantasy, his work has been credited with spurring a renaissance in Scottish literature.' Bangor: Caxton Press, High Street, 1909. Rare Welsh language primer written, illustrated and printed in Bangor. Large oblong quarto with decorative textured red card wrappers with a linen backstrip. Both wrappers and binding are creased and delicate but intact. Staining along the tail of the leaves, coloured red on endpaper from the red wrapper. Original ownership signature of 'Mrs Mois Park Lodge Cemaes Bay Augst 7th 1909' to first endpaper. This 52 page language guide is illustrated throughout to help the young student of Welsh with vocabulary and occasionally a song. The preface describes the inspiration of the book being an encounter with an Australian visitor to north Wales in the summer of 1903 who picked up some of the language during her stay but alerted Mrs Lloyd Jones to the need for an 'Illustrated Welsh Alphabet Book'.
